Band/Artist Name & Pronunciation: Dan Barry

Recommended if you like: Ben Harper. John Mayer. Le Galaxie (Not at all, but people should listen to them. They're awesome)

Story behind your band/artist name: I've been asked if it's a stage name, but alas it is my real name. About 10 yrs ago I made "The Dan Barry Army Group" on Facebook. It was composed of about 400 or so people with variations of the name Dan Barry. I'd like to think that had I chosen a stage name it would be more unique.

Band Members: Dan Barry - vocals/guitar.

What part of the DC region is the artist tied to and how? Where is the artist's current home base if not DC : VIRGINIA

At least 3 interesting/entertaining facts about the band related to persons/events in Washington DC area: I had the opportunity to play for Neil Young. During one of my early gigs in the area I recognized him at a venue. Somehow he was unnoticed. He gave me the coded look that said "Yes, I'm famous. YOU WILL SAY NOTHING!"...and I did not. His feelings about my performance is unknown ATM.

I also played a gig where roughly 75% of the audience was hearing impaired. They seemed to enjoy themselves so I think I literally gave them "good vibes".

I also had a 90s sitcom loosely based on my family. Guess which one!!

Band/Artist Name & Pronunciation: The Duskwhales (The Dusk-Wails)

Recommended if you like: The Beatles, The Doors, Vampire Weekend, The Killers

Story behind your band/artist name: We started the band in early high school and went through a series of terrible band names before settling on The Duskwhales (arguably also a terrible name). We just put the words Dusk and whales together and thought it sounded funny and evoked a striking image, which has sort of become our logo. Not long after deciding on the name a couple of us were using the photocopier at school and sure enough on the little screen inexplicably appeared an image of a whale with a setting sun in the background, which we interpreted as a huge sign and confirmed our decision to be called The Duskwhales.

Band Members: Seth (guitar, vocals), Chris (drums, vocals), Brian (keyboards, vocals)

We were the first indie rock band to play Smith Public Trust in Brookland. Story behind your band/artist name: The name 'Fortunes Found' comes from the first line of our song 'Making Space.' The band came together almost immediately without any try outs or searching, almost like a fortune waiting to be found. It also signifies a search, or seeking something that is already there, just waiting for you to arrive.

Band Members: Eli Lev (Vocals + Acoustic Guitar + Harmonica + Native Flute) Michael Miraglia (drums) Bojan Novevski (bass) Corey Thuro (Mandolin + Vocals) Dante Frisiello (Lead Guitar)

At least 3 interesting/entertaining facts about the band related to persons/events in Washington DC area:1) We hadn't had a full band practice before our first gig

2) Bojan is from Macedonia and plays in a balkan cover band

Band/Artist Name & Pronunciation: flowerbomb

Recommended if you like: Hop Along, Little Big Leaugue, Colleen Green, Angel Olsen

Story behind your band/artist name: We wanted to come up with something that was stereotypically feminine and then destroy that concept. That’s something we do in a lot of our songs so we wanted to mirror that with our band name. I was researching different things while brainstorming and came across a perfume called flowerbomb and the name stuck!

Band Members: Dan - Drums, Nat- Bass/Keys/back up vocals, Charles- lead guitar, Rachel- vocals/rhythm guitar/keys

What part of the DC region is the artist tied to and how? Where is the artist's current home base if not DC : We actually all live in the DC Suburbs! 3 of us are currently living in NOVA, and Charles lives in Silver Spring, MD. We practice and record in Alexandria, VA!

At least 3 interesting/entertaining facts about the band related to persons/events in Washington DC area: 3 of us met at an open mic right outside of DC (Alexandria,VA) when I was only 15!

Dan has worked at several bars that are integral to the DC scene including Marvin’s room, Hogo, and the Gibson.

Our first show at a DC venue was at DC9.

Info

Band/Artist Name & Pronunciation: Frass Green, Frass (like Grass) Green

Recommended if you like: (Sandy) Alex G, Wavves, Beach Boys, Girls, Magic Kids

Story behind your band/artist name: There were a lot of camel crickets in the cellar where I (Joe) recorded the first album, and they pooped on everything. “Frass” is insect shit, and I liked “Frass Green” because it sounded like “Grass Green,” but ultimately meant “Shit Green.”

Band Members: Joe (rhythm guitar, lead vocals), Tyler (bass, keys, vocals), Antonio (Tonino) (drums), Matt (lead guitar, violin, vocals)

What part of the DC region is the artist tied to and how? Where is the artist's current home base if not DC : All of us live in DC. Matt and Tonino live in NoMa, Tyler and Joe are looking to move in together in Columbia Heights or Mount Pleasant in the next month.

At least 3 interesting/entertaining facts about the band related to persons/events in Washington DC area: Tonino studied jazz drumming in college but has an extremely tenuous relationship with the genre. He occasionally plays in jazz jams around the DC/Virginia area, but he really just wants to play loud.

Joe announced during a recent show at DC9 that he was unemployed and extremely poor, and the owner, Bill Spieler, who was working the bar that night, gave him a job application. Joe now works as a barback there.

Tyler is working toward his Ph.D. at Georgetown, in plant biology, and he spends roughly one day a week doing field work and getting smelly in a New Jersey marsh.

Matt started playing classical violin at 3 years old, and originally wanted to do it professionally. Then as a teenager an instructor told him he wasn’t good enough, and he started playing in rock bands. He also plays off and on with DC-area band Club Scout.

Anything else we should know, or you want to share: The band is playing with Infinity Crush, Bottled Up and Max Gowan at the Rock & Roll Hotel on July 27, and is working on a new album — the first as a full group (and with decent equipment).

What part of the DC region is the artist tied to and how? Where is the artist's current home base if not DC? : Norfolk/Hampton Roads

At least 3 interesting/entertaining facts about the band that are related to persons/places/things/events that happened in the Washington DC area. Give us fun stuff, not normal bio stuff!: Best show we've played in DC was definitely the Rock and Roll Hotel stage. Played with our friends in French Admirals. Best show we've caught in DC was the reunited Replacements at the Echostage, bar none. We had caught an earlier reunion show, but that was the first time seeing them under a roof.

Our most memorable experiences was a few years back, we played with The NRI's at Velvet Lounge. That show sticks out for a couple reasons -- Nyan (from The NRI's) is so incredibly nice...we got sloshed...and we also had our bass player at the time back out of the tour a few nights before we departed. Our three piece was down to a duo, soldiering on as drums and mandolin, which isn't so bad...except The NRI's are 7-piece, so the contrast was more apparent. We actually had to follow them up because their violinist was 8-months pregnant...I'm turning red just remembering taking the stage after them. Not sure if it was a combination of nerves or alcohol but I put a second crash on instead of my ride and was stuck with it for the whole show because at that point you've just gotta commit...I remember it as a super fun, go for broke show which was definitely the mantra of the (bassist-less) tour. No apologies, no disclaimers, just play loud (and crash-y).

Nyan was super nice and after the gig, we went down to the chili bowl and ate terrible, delicious food and were regaled with stories of Ian MacKaye and the legendary Dischord DIY scene of DC. Sunday the 7th should be more well-rounded as we have a committed bassist and guitarist with us this time around!

Anything else we should know, or you want to share?: We've got a new record out called "Here's to Almost" and you can check it out on our bandcamp page (feralconservatives.bandcamp.com) ahead of the show. See you at Sehkfraft!

What part of the DC region is the artist tied to and how? Where is the artist's current home base if not DC : the artist is a 9 year resident of the city of Washington, DC and has be playing for 5 years on the local scene

At least 3 interesting/entertaining facts about the band related to persons/events in Washington DC area: Grey and Howard raise money for Ben Tuffs music scholarship every year in DC. Last year their cover band played STAX music and this year it's the Police, with Grey on vocals.
the bands third video was filmed at Comet Ping Pong and got Pizzagate trolls up in arms with it's weird imagery and narrative.
Drummer Andrew Michael Holden is the owner of the Inn at Cedar Knoll in Alexandria near Mount Vernon, which serves French American food in style.

Anything else we should know, or you want to share: the Grey A is a DC based band and artist who’s first album My Country is a Politi-pop opera, sounding off with ballads of truth about income inequality, a rigged election system and the climate change to come. From the song Dumb Fool to the track Unusual As Usual, the Grey A touches on issues from science to sin. Recorded in Nashville and packed with some of the catchiest hooks you’ve heard in years, the record has been well received by both NPR and No Depression. The band is the brainchild of songwriter and Texas native Grey Jacks, who is best known for his work on three full length albums with the Nashville indie-rock band Glossary. Band/Artist Name & Pronunciation: Humble Fire

Recommended if you like: Wye Oak, Lower Dens, Beach House, Broken Social Scene, Deerhunter, Lykke Li

Story behind your band/artist name: We debated names for a long time, but eventually we landed on Humble Fire, a name that Nefra had come across when watching an indie film with her parents.

Band Members: Nefra Faltas, Xaq Rothman, Dave Epley, Jason Arrol

What part of the DC region is the artist tied to and how? Where is the artist's current home base if not DC : We all met and started the band in the District. We all live in DC off the green line and for years have practiced in Mt Pleasant (with a brief exile to Rhode Island Ave area :). Nefra grew up in Reston, VA and Xaq grew up in Takoma Park, MD. Jason is from NC and Dave from TN.

At least 3 interesting/entertaining facts about the band related to persons/events in Washington DC area: 1. Humble Fire owes its origins to Craigslist, which first brought guitarist Dave and singer Nefra together through another project and later recruited Xaq, bassist, who responded to Dave’s ad with a purposeful manifesto that will forever go down in band history.
2. The band's songwriting process is very collaborative and revolves around practices where a band member will present a rhythm, riff, melody idea, etc. and then the band will workshop it, taking an iphone recording away to listen to for the week and tackle at the next practice. We have a folder of dozens of song starts and ideas over the past 5 years.
3. The band celebrates the diverse musical influences that each member draws from their musical backgrounds--from bluegrass and classical, to punk and hip hop--weaving addictive rhythms and vulnerable vocals through tightly wound guitar and bass melodies.

Anything else we should know, or you want to share: We are releasing our new album "Builder" on July 28. The first three singles off the album are already out (Taliesin, Fine Line and Builder). Taliesin and Builder both have music videos we're very proud of that we created with local DC artists. The Builder video premiered on NPR "First Watch".

You can pre-order the new album at http://humblefire.band in vinyl, CD and digital. We also have super comfy shirts, buttons and a flexible vinyl single of "Taliesin" for sale!

Here's our full bio:

Humble Fire’s album “Builder” explores physical and emotional experiences around loss and reconstruction, from family deaths and failed romances to the shocks and stresses they have navigated as a band. Through those experiences, they’ve come to appreciate that reconstruction isn’t something you can tackle on your own: it requires an entire crew. “Builder,” then, is as much about that process of putting yourself back together, as it is about the relationships that can help or hinder that process. Since Humble Fire’s members have known each other over the past five or so years, they’ve all shown up for each other in different ways as part of that reconstruction crew. They’re lucky to have found family in each other in that way.

Somewhat accidentally, the album also ended up being about working out questions of identity. ‘Who am I now, in this world without my parents in it’, for example? ‘How can I take care of others without losing myself?’ When the band first listened back to the fully assembled album, they realized it had become a sort of therapy in working out some of those questions. More broadly, Humble Fire’s collective identity is also something they try to be very intentional about. As a DC-based band, they’re immersed in and identify with the tradition of DIY independence and social awareness typically associated with the politics of hardcore punk (despite not working in the genre). They strive to embody those values as a band as much as in their personal lives.

Humble Fire owes its origins to Craigslist, which first brought guitarist Dave and singer Nefra together through another project and later recruited Xaq, bassist, who responded to Dave’s ad with a purposeful manifesto that will forever go down in band history. While not the band’s original drummer, Jason had long been a friend and active musician in the DC DIY music circuit before signing on in 2016. In its current form, the band celebrates the diverse musical influences that each member draws from--from bluegrass and classical, to punk and hip hop--weaving addictive rhythms and vulnerable vocals through tightly wound guitar and bass melodies.

Info

Band/Artist Name & Pronunciation: Honest Haloway (Hal is pronounced like the name Al, not like Hall)

Recommended if you like: We take a lot of influence from indie rock / electronica bands. Some of the more popular bands would be "Local Natives", "Tame Impala", "Grizzly Bear" & "M83"

Story behind your band/artist name: I was going to call it Honest Hemingway initially, but at the time it seemed like there were a lot of bands doing a play on a famous persons name. For example "Com Truise" & "Gnarls Barkley". I didn't want it to come across as a joke so I changed it to Haloway because I thought it had a nice ring.

Band Members: Tim Kratzer (vocals, keys), Fico Lazzaro-Colon (Bass), Greg Balleza (Guitar, Keys), Paul Burgess (Backing Vocals, Guitar, keys), Ed Barnabas (Drums)

What part of the DC region is the artist tied to and how? Where is the artist's current home base if not DC : We all live in DC, except for Ed who is in Maryland. A few of us are DMV natives.

At least 3 interesting/entertaining facts about the band related to persons/events in Washington DC area: - I (Tim) actually met Fico and Ed when trying out for their DC band "Cedars" I believe around 2005 or 2006. I never joined and ended up starting my own project. Many years later it all came full circle when I was looking for a bassist and drummer, Ed and Fico joined my band Honest Haloway.

- Myself (Tim) and Greg are both DMV natives. We actually met in Guitar class in 8th or 9th grade I think. That was about 20 years ago and we've been either working on music together or getting feedback from each other ever since.

- Surprisingly we're all fans of the local sports teams (except Paul), which is not common in a transient place like DC. Anyways, we're all used to being disappointed.

Band/Artist Name & Pronunciation: Jahnel Daliya  -  Ja-nel Da-lee-uh

Recommended if you like: Sara Bareilles, tricky question. I've been told my sound is unique

Story behind your band/artist name: My mother thought the name sounded pretty and wanted to make people work to pronounce it. I also struggle with picking an official band name.   So until then, we are me. Jahnel Daliya

Band Members: Jahnel- lead vocals and guitar, John Wooten on bass, Cynthia Marie on keys and backing vocals, I alternate between drummers, they are both apart of my band, Elena Lacayo on percussion and Andrew Gabor on percussion. Sometimes we are joined by an extra guitarist.

What part of the DC region is the artist tied to and how? Where is the artist's current home base if not DC :  I live in Stafford VA but I perform mostly in Arlington and DC. I had my first paid gig in DC in 2015 and have focused on performing in Northern Virginia and DC.  I travel 45 minutes to an hour to rehearse with DC band members or play shows. It's a well worth it work commute.

At least 3 interesting/entertaining facts about the band related to persons/events in Washington DC area: 1) Last year we played 3 shows in what seemed like the hottest weekend of August and Elena played the drums shirtless, we also may have had mild heat stroke.
2) I drove my band to a gig in Adams Morgan and after they unloaded all our gear to take into the venue I drove around looking for parking for 20 minutes, then I ran...RAN to the gig and once inside I joined them on stage and we started our first song. I don't know where I found the breath.
3) I might have hit (bumped) a car while parking for that Adams Morgan gig.

Anything else we should know, or you want to share: I was inspired the the amazing talent in DC to pursue music. My husband made a comment at a Blake Shelton concert about how these musicians get to do what they love for a living. I started thinking how I never even put myself out there, how I never really gave songwriting a shot. This thought process was the beginning of my music journey and I'm so glad I explored it.  My debut ep released in june 2017 and I joined a classic rock/top 40 cover band in the spring of 2017.
