Band/Artist Name & Pronunciation: Jasmine Gillison, JAZZ-MEN GILL-EH-SUN
Recommended if you like: William Fitzsimmons musical style (fingerpicking, powerful introspective lyrics). Some have mentioned Tracy Chapman vocally (warm, soothing vocals).
Story behind your band/artist name: It's just my name! :)
Band Members: Usually I play solo, but when I play with a band, my main crew is Ben Tufts (drums and percussion), Mark Williams (electric guitar), and Kevin de Souza (bass).
What part of the DC region is the artist tied to and how? Where is the artist's current home base if not DC : I grew up in Northern Virginia. I'm currently based in Arlington, VA. I first started performing out at an Open Mic in Fairfax, VA in 2010. I worked at Artisphere, the cultural arts center in Rosslyn from 2010 until its closing in 2015. When I first started working there, I was looking for an Open Mic in the area (close to work), and found IOTA. IOTA Club & Cafe was huge for me for several years, up until it too closed. It was the center of my social world, really. I made so many friends, and as result was blessed with so many musical and non-musical experiences. Several of my songs likely would not have been written without the experiences that IOTA provided me.
At least 3 interesting/entertaining facts about the band related to persons/events in Washington DC area:
-I used to be on an ice hockey team and we played our games in the same complex where the Washington Capitals would practice.
-I was the first musician to perform for "The IOTA Chair" series, started by DC singer songwriter Rachel Levitin, as an homage to the magic that was and still is the community that IOTA fostered. (you can find my video on The IOTA Chair's YouTube channel!)
-I once was a greeter at an event that Lady Gaga was attending in DC. I stood on the stairs outside as she entered the building, but unfortunately, did not get to say hello.
Anything else we should know, or you want to share: -I love bookstores and libraries. Probably not surprisingly, a dream of mine is to play a tour at bookstores and coffee shops around the US.
-I have had one experience doing voice over work, for a promotional video. I would love to do more voice over work - but I'm thinking kids cartoons or something like that :)
-I studied French for several years and spent some time in Paris during school. I visited again a couple years ago and made some new friends. They've got a solid Open Mic scene!
-I love performing holiday music. One of my favorite things to do is perform a holiday song in French, at least once! The crowd always seems to enjoy it too.
