Band/Artist Name & Pronunciation: Bad Influence

Recommended if you like: Fabulous Thunderbirds, BB King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, Little Walter

Story behind your band/artist name: Staying at the apex of the mid-Atlantic region’s competitive blues and roots music scene for a career that spans three decades isn’t easy. But that’s what the Bad Influence Band has done — even while extending their reputation across the country thanks to wildly entertaining, high-energy performances, extensive airplay and three well-received albums. Whether performing at a festival, on a stage at Kennedy Center, a showcase at the NAMM Show or on Memphis’ hallowed Beale Street, the four-piece group featuring guitarist Michael Tash, harmonica ace and singer Roger Edsall, bassist-vocalist Bob Mallardi and drummer David Thaler are unabashed crowd pleasers thanks to their expert ensemble playing, strong melodies, addictive grooves, sly original songwriting and sheer intensity. Even audiences unfamiliar with blues and the other styles of roots music that inform the group’s wide repertoire are smitten with the Bad Influence Band’s joyful performances. “The most important thing is that everybody has fun — the audience and us,” explains bandleader Tash. “Whether we’re playing an original song or a classic, we’re going to put our hearts and souls into it in a way that people can hear, see and practically touch.” The Bad Influence Band’s audiences have continued to grow in recent years. Their 2011 album Under the Influence introduced the group to a host of new listeners when it made the top five on the “Picks To Click” chart on Sirius/XM Satellite Radio’s two-million listener channel “B.B. King’s Bluesville.” And the same disc — stacked with originals and a few wisely chosen chestnuts that displayed the group’s uncanny ability to make vintage tunes sound new — was a finalist in the Blues Foundation’s 2012 International Blues Challenge competition for Best Self-Produced CD. Under the Influence was also nominated in the Best Blues Recording category for a 2012 WAMMIE (Washington Area Music Association) award. The albums Under the Influence along with 2001’s WAMMIE award winning Tastes Like Chicken and the 1998 homage to their musical roots Where We Been trace this popular outfit’s evolution. The Bad Influence Band’s ignition came in the late 1980s, when Tash was taken under wing by legendary DC-area blues guitarist Steve Jacobs, who began schooling him in the genre’s roots. In 1988, after some years in the rock ‘n’ roll trenches, Tash founded the Bad Influence Band and over the next decade their popularity around the Nation’s Capital area steamrolled. By the time Where We Been was recorded, the group was a six-piece with a reputation for great live shows and a vast repertoire of classic and modern blues. Various personnel changes and refinements in direction and sound led to the current four-piece line-up of Tash, Edsall, Mallardi and Thaler, which cemented in 1993. It quickly became evident they had a strong group chemistry as songwriters, in addition to their formidable musicianship. All four together refine the sketches for tunes that individual members create. The results include rollicking rollercoaster rides like “Don’t Forget Your Night Clothes,” which pins its midnight romance charm to Edsall’s backbone harmonica riff. Tastes Like Chicken also boasts the tongue-in-cheek parable for the lovesick “The Clown,” which glides over a perfectly chiseled shuffle. Both songs feature Edsall’s smooth red-clay singing, while “Man Child” kicks off Under the Influence with a lightning strike of pure chug ‘n’ roar blues, powered by Mallardi’s whiskey and dust voice. The latter album’s also home to Tash’s tour-de-force guitar performance on the Albert King classic “As the Years Go Passing By.” His playing is an incendiary blend of stinging vibrato, fat-toned single note melodies, dramatic power-strummed chords and graceful fills and asides that punctuate the song’s soul-deep lyrics. Of course, each band member has a distinguished reputation in his own right. Tash is one of the East Coast’s most respected blues guitarists and songwriters, and has been inducted into the Northern Virginia Blues Hall of Fame. He endorses Epiphone guitars, GHS strings, Quilter Amps, Peavey Electronics, Levy’s Leathers, Spectraflex cables and PedalSnake cable systems, and has been nominated for a WAMMIE for Best Blues Instrumentalist. Edsall shares a similar reputation as a harmonica player and has performed with Jimmy Thackery, Kenny Neal, Kim Wilson and other greats. He endorses Hohner Harmonicas and Peavey Electronics and has been nominated for a WAMMIE for Best Blues Vocalist. Mallardi began his career as a bass prodigy under the spell of Stax Records, bringing his own original fusion of blues and R&B styles to the band. He endorses GHS strings and Hartke Amplifiers. The classically trained Thaler played timpani with various Orchestras before picking up the kit and becoming a die-hard blues fan and switching styles, racking up more than 45 years of performing experience. He endorses Sonor Drums, Beato Bags and Roc-n-Soc thrones. The BadInfluence Band has appeared on hundreds of club and festival stages, including the House of Blues in Las Vegas and the Chesapeake Bay Blues Festival. Their winning songs, musical dynamism and strong presence has led to opening slots on bills with a coterie of stars: Heart, Shemekia Copeland, Candye Kane, Roomful of Blues, Albert Cummings and Albert Castiglia, among others. “We’re looking forward to expanding our touring range and having even more fun playing and recording our music,” says Tash. “We’ve made it our mission to take the blues wherever we can – across the U.S. and to the world — and to entertain audiences and educate fans about just how deep, real, varied and exciting this style of music can be.”

Band Members: Michael "Jr" Tash - Guitars and Vocals, Roger Edsall - Harmonica, Slide Guitar and Vocals, Bob Mallardi - Bass and Vocals, David Thaler - Drums

What part of the DC region is the artist tied to and how? Where is the artist's current home base if not DC : We are based in Montgomery and PG county. We've been performing in the area for 30 years.

At least 3 interesting/entertaining facts about the band related to persons/events in Washington DC area: 1 - We used to regularly play at the historic Club Soda on Connecticut Ave where mayor for life, Marion Barry, used to stop by.
2 - When Roger isn't playing the blues, he has a side gig relocating cars all over the country and visiting baseball stadiums as he travels.
3 - Jr is a serial entrepreneur - Besides running the band, he owns a company that sells point of sale sytems to restaurants and a company that does silk screening, embroidery, and basically makes any kind of crap with your name on it.

Anything else we should know, or you want to share: This year, 2018, marks 30 years since Bad Influence® was formed. The original band made up of Michael Tash, Rick Haveland, Tom Swanton, and Fred Hillyard started out playing the blues in November of 1988. The lineup changed over the first couple of years ending up in 1993 with the current line up of Bob Mallardi, Roger Edsall, Michael Tash and David Thaler. We're very excited to be playing together, with the same line up, for 25 years!

We want to thank everyone for 30 years of support for our music and the blues!

New CD to be released late Sept 2018.

Band/Artist Name & Pronunciation: Johnny and the Headhunters

Recommended if you like: Eric Clapton Stevie Ray Vaughn

Story behind your band/artist name: Since he was a young boy, Johnny Ticktin felt the call of blues deep in his heart and soul. Day and night he listened to the recordings of the great legends of the genre, so he soon decided his life will be devoted to play guitar and sing the blues. He started to hang around blues circles and play as much as possible. Harmonica player and good friend Larry Wise introduced him to Louisiana Red and together they formed a trio known as Nobody’s Children which extensively toured along United States and Canada. Thanks to Louisiana Red, Johnny could meet many of those Chicago blues legends he had so deeply admired when he was a young guy. Now Ticktin leads his own band, The Headhunters which, besides doing regular and frequent tours, has just released its eighth album. Once again this new release shows Johnny’s loose and uninhibited as well as sweet smell and lively style, displayed in ten good versions that cover different kinds of blues like swamp blues, roadhouse blues, funky groovin' blues or even mambo blues, but always focused in Chicago blues roots, that becomes the band more distinctive stamp. Now Johnny has consolidated his career based on hard work, a passionately playing and the eight released albums, that become an excellent business card. VERY GOOD.

Info

Band/Artist Name & Pronunciation: The Roustabouts (LIKE: "Out and about")

Recommended if you like: NRBQ, Freddy King,

Story behind your band/artist name: The band came together originally during several years of weekly sessions at the open mic blues jam at The Zoo Bar (RIP) in Cleveland Park. The same five guys getting up and playing two or three tunes week after week. At first there was nothing, then, there was something. It was very hap-hazard. And one night the MC called out, "Hey Pete (that's me) you're next. Go and get your band of Roustabouts together."

Band Members: Andrew Wiley (lead vocals), Pete Daniels (fiddle), Dan Shine (guitar), Jeff Muller (bass), Phil Bucci (drums)

What part of the DC region is the artist tied to and how? Where is the artist's current home base if not DC : Two of us (myself and the guitar player) are DC-area natives who grew up in Silver Spring just outside the city line. The other three are transplants who have lived here for years. Today all of us live in the Maryland suburbs... Hyattsville, Kensington and Rockville

At least 3 interesting/entertaining facts about the band related to persons/events in Washington DC area: Fiddle player Pete Daniel's first performance in DC happened at the Kennedy Center at the age of 6 (as part of a large group of Suzuki students).
As teenagers, Pete Daniels & Dan Shine's favorite spot for shows was St. Stephens Church on 16th Street in Northwest, where bands like "Clutch" first got their start. Both also attended multiple shows at theORIGINAL 930 Club on F Street downtown.
Bassist Jeff Muller used to work at Maryland-based Paul Reed Smith guitars.
Despite living in the DC area for my entire life (this is Pete) I have never been to the top of the Washington Monument.

Anything else we should know, or you want to share: The Roustabouts is no ordinary blues band.

Their genre-bending, fiddle-infused sound weaves traditional and contemporary blues together with healthy doses of rock, funk and classic R&B. The band’s debut album, "Plenty of Blues," features a dozen tracks, eleven of which are road-tested originals that have been thrilling Washington, DC-area audiences for years. With help from the legendary Mark Wenner of the Nighthawks on harmonica, award-winning R&B artist Tommy Lepson on keyboards, and others, "Plenty of Blues" takes listeners on a bold, groove-filled journey that defies easy labels.

The Roustabouts came together in the early 2000s, and made their mark on the local scene during a seven-year run of monthly gigs at The Zoo Bar, DC’s beloved blues dive and a frequent hang for many of theforemost performers in the city. The band's founding members are Pete Daniels, a classically-trained violinist, and Andrew Wiley, a choir and theater kid turned lead vocalist. The two met while attending college in Syracuse, New York, a gritty, rust-belt town filled with talented blues musicians who were more than happy to encourage new converts to this timeless genre. Journeyman guitarist Dan Shine, who has been obsessed with the six-string since childhood after seeing Chuck Berry perform, joined the band early on. More recent additions include veteran bassist Jeff Muller, who has played with scores of notable roots music acts including the late, great Allen Toussaint, and drummer Phil Bucci, whose powerful sound is influenced in part by years spent abroad in Africa and performances with the exceptional Cameroonian guitarist Vincent Nguini.

These days The Roustabouts perform regularly at venues in the greater DC Metro area and beyond, having inspired a large fan base affectionately known as the RoustaCrowd. The band sets out to create the most soulful, entertaining performance possible, giving audiences new ways to experience and enjoy the blues. Live performances include an exciting mix of original tunes and curated covers infused with intense musicality and emotion. And when things get really heated, it’s not unusual to find people dancing on the tables. It’s during moments like this, when the music comes alive and the bond between band and audience is strongest, that the blues is as vibrant as it has ever been.

Story behind your band/artist name: Deep fans of blues artists like Son House, and the word 'revelator' kept coming up in our lyrical sketches, so we decided to go from there, but we needed another word. Driving through Virginia (our home state) we see many hills, and we thought, that's the blues. The ups and down, the valleys, the glory, and it all fits together in the name.

Band Members: Bobby (vocals, guitar), Seth (bass, vocals), Gary (drums, vocals)

What part of the DC region is the artist tied to and how? Where is the artist's current home base if not DC : Virginia, and Northern Virginia

At least 3 interesting/entertaining facts about the band related to persons/events in Washington DC area: Bobby Thompson, of Revelator Hill, got off the road in April, following a year-long tour supporting ‘Atlantic Detour’ and ‘Live By The Creek.’ After returning home, he dove into the only thing he knows and started writing right away. After uploading an acoustic version of ‘My Everything’ to YouTube, with great fan response, he went into the studio in May with Revelator Hill, and cut the tune. It mixes the elements of his singer-songwriter mentality with a funky groove.

“We tracked this during Jazz Fest in New Orleans, and I saw on social media that some of my friends were down there. I was wearing my favorite Tipitina’s shirt that day in the studio, so the vibe felt right. We made it funky, and it worked. We added congas and some extra slide guitar, and that was it. Live vocals. Enjoy!” says Bobby.

‘My Everything’ was recorded at Area 51 Studios in College Park MD, with Tommy Lepson engineering. The song was written by Bobby Thompson, produced by Revelator HIll, and mixed by Jim Fox at Lion & Fox Studios in Washington DC. The song features Matt Miller on percussion, along with the traditional Revelator Hill lineup of Bobby Thompson (vocals, slide guitars), Seth Morrissey (bass) and Gary Crockett (drums).

Anything else we should know, or you want to share: Virginia based blues-rock band, Revelator Hill (with Ron Holloway) cracks 2018 with an outstanding compilation of blues-rock tunes with a rock edge. Live by the Creek (Root Nine Records) to be released January 26, 2018, chronicles the band’s inspired performance before an audience of two hundred on a hot summer night in 2017.

Masterful guitarist/singer/songwriter, Bobby Thompson, has been a fixture of the Washington D.C. regional music scene for years. In that time, he’s gone from sought after sideman to accomplished band leader. Live By the Creek features tenor saxophonist, Ron Holloway, who is known for his work with Dizzy Gillespie, and as a working member of The Warren Haynes Band. He is often seen as a guest of bands Tedeschi-Trucks and Melvin Seals.

Live By The Creek is a first rate blues-rock album with stellar musicians, including Bobby Thompson on guitar and vocals, Seth Morrissey on bass and vocals, Gary Crockett on drums and vocals and Wes Lanich on keyboards.

Recommended if you like: Etta James, Sharon Jones, Koko Taylor

Story behind your band/artist name: Our band name comes from our love of classic soul and blues, and our guiter player is #18.

Band Members: Robbin Kapsalis - Vocals, Bill Holter - Guitar, Alex Kuldell - Drums, Mark Chandler - Bass

What part of the DC region is the artist tied to and how? Where is the artist's current home base if not DC : Northern Virginia is our home base within the DMV region.

At least 3 interesting/entertaining facts about the band related to persons/events in Washington DC area: When Robbin first started out in the area, she once drove 4 hours to HOPEFULLY sit in for a song with the Nighthawks, since the band formed we've opened for them at least four times.
Robbin doesn't play any instruments, yet she's the primary songwriter.
Both Bill and Robbin are conversant in foreign languages.

Anything else we should know, or you want to share: Performing together since 2013, the band started in the clubs near their home in Northern Virginia. Residencies in Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia are the backbone of a circuit that extends across the Eastern Seaboard. In 2016, they represented the Central Virginia Blues Society at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee and continue to appear in the city. They have been fortunate to share stages with several great performers, among them The Nighthawks, Billy Price, Lil’ Ed and the Blues Imperials and Albert Cummings.

They’ve always shared the same thoughts about music and in particular their live shows, “we’re here to move you, one way or another.” The sound reflects their love of traditional blues and soul but also the desire to bring it current for new audiences. Vintage #18 brings a high-energy show with hard-driving blues rhythms and soul grooves that will move you. Built on a framework of uniquely talented and dedicated musicians, the album features the unique sound of Bill Holter on guitar (a.k.a. #18), while the groove is laid down by Alex Kuldell on drums and Mark Chandler on bass. Soulful vocals are delivered by newcomer and bandleader Robbin Kapsalis, and the collective Good-Mojo-Getdown is provided by all.
