Band/Artist Name & Pronunciation: Moonshine Society (Moon-shine Soh-sigh-ety)

Recommended if you like: Bonnie Raitt, Tedeschi Trucks

Story behind your band/artist name: In 2009, members of The Joe Poppen Band and Black Betty & The Bad Habits merged groups. We decided to remove egos from the band name, and since we have so many incredible musicians sitting in and joining us, we decided to form a Society. Once you’ve played a show, you’re officially a member of the Society.

Band Members: Black Betty- Vox, Joe Poppen- Guitar, Christopher Brown- Bass, Barry Hart- Drums. Other members include Wes Lanich (keys/B3), Rodney Dunton (drums), Tod Ellsworth (bass), and more.

What part of the DC region is the artist tied to and how? Where is the artist's current home base if not DC : Northern VA, where Joe Poppen was born and most of the band currently reaides.

At least 3 interesting/entertaining facts about the band related to persons/events in Washington DC area: Joe Poppen toured with DC artist Memohis Gold for 10 years starting at age 17 until he took a break to go to Berklee College of Music.

Black Betty has been published in several pinup magazines and works often with Mid-Atlantic pinup photographers. She’s one of the most recognized retro inspired DC pinups.

Barry Hart was the drummer for the late, great Danny Gatton. Gatton was one of Joe’s guitar heroes and biggest influences. What a treat to be in a band with one of your lifelong inspirations!

Anything else we should know, or you want to share: Many folks will also recognize members of Moonshine Society from The Ron Holloway Band.

The band lived in Shanghai, China for a few months while performing at the House of Blues and Jazz.

Black Betty is originally from San Jose, CA and is convinced there are no good burritos in DC. (Proove me wrong!)
