Band/Artist Name & Pronunciation: Coral Benders, Core-ul Ben-durs

Story behind your band/artist name: We formerly played as the Virginia Slims in homage to NoVa, where three of us first lived upon moving to DC. We changed our name when recording our first album (in fear of the Big Tobacco copyright), oscillating between “Coral Bleaching” (two of us work full time jobs in the environment sphere) and “Atomic Dunes” (among a hundred others). Coral Benders resulted to encompass both our surf melodies and fuzzy, tone-bending havoc. We’ve also played a few shows under the moniker “Hot Garbage.”

Band Members: Brennan “DJ” Duckett (guitar/vocals); Jacob “JBUTT” Butler (bass/vocals); Shawn “Doctor” Whites (guitar/vocals); Matt “Safari” Ciferri (drums); Patrick “P-Funk” Nease (organ/keys/tambourine)

What part of the DC region is the artist tied to and how? Where is the artist's current home base if not DC : Most of us reside within the H-Street Corridor; one member lives in NoVA.

At least 3 interesting/entertaining facts about the band related to persons/events in Washington DC area: Van Hillard of Park Snakes helped us get our start in 2016 by hosting us almost monthly for a year at Dr. Clock’s Nowhere Bar in AdMo (R.I.P. Dr. Clock’s).

One of the best shows we’ve played was a private party at an old armory for a newly-tenured Johns Hopkins professor. The crowd was a bunch of Summer of Love survivors but possibly featured the most dancing we’ve had at a show (including some high school prom-esque couples’ dancing). We think the host had the wrong band when he booked us, but we ended up signing autographs at the end of the night so we think it worked out well.

We host a Halloween house show every year that (only sometimes) gets broken up by the cops.

Anything else we should know, or you want to share: We’ve been known to “get gorked” on stage - our multi-instrumentalist Pat has been known to roll around like an animal. Our newest single "Supermoon" is out now on all streaming services, and we've got new music planned for later this summer/fall!
