Bronsen and the Expedition

Info

Band/Artist Name & Pronunciation: Bronsen and the Expedition

Recommended if you like: We're like.....funk, pop and jazz thrown into a blender. Some people have called us John Mayer mixed with Hiatus Kaioyte. We love and take influences from many artists such as D'angelo, Anderson .Paak, Dave Matthews Band, Esperanza Spalding, etc.

Story behind your band/artist name: The trio was first started as a collaboration, with me writing the majority of the songs, and theother two adding their own voice to that. We call it the expedition because our music reflects the journey we're on, good and bad!

Band Members: Bronsen-Guitar/Vocals/Bass/Keyboard, Conner-Drums, Natalie-Keyboard/Synthesizer/Synth-bass

What part of the DC region is the artist tied to and how? Where is the artist's current home base if not DC : We're all apart of the DC area through different channels such as school or travel, but as a band we've been drawn to the DC scene because of thediversity and creativity and just general friendliness of musicians and people here. We've all spent time in New York, and we didn't feel as connected. Although we still play in New York often, we're drawn to DC as our home because quite simply it has accepted us and made us want to play even more. We're currently living outside the city in NOVA and in Maryland, but in 2 months Conner andBronsen are moving to Columbia Heights to be even more connected to the place we love to spend time in the most.

At least 3 interesting/entertaining facts about the band related to persons/events in Washington DC area: 1. You can find us at many of the jam sessions around town, from the Gypsie Sallies jam with Gordon Sterling, to the Bossa Soul-down Session, to thejazz jams at Soto, Jojos and as many places we can get to, we're looking to meet as many people as possible
2. Before or after our shows, you may see Conner climbing things in the city, as he loves anything that's mildly unnecessary and kind of dangerous.
3. One of our first gigs at Boss Bistro in Adams Morgan, and we love that venue and area, and it's one of our favorite places
4. One of our favorite activities as friends and as a band is exploring the city and the surrounding parts. Natalie and Bronsen once walked around for miles to stop by every venue we could think of that we hadn't been to before, and handed them our demo. This was before we had any recorded material, but it was quite the adventure, and we love doing that with or without a purpose.

Anything else we should know, or you want to share: We just put out our EP that we've been working on for about a year, andwe're incredibly excited for the future. The past 4 months have been tumultuous...to say the least...for every member of the band, due to personal loss and issues (2017 has been the worst for almost everyone I know) but we're hoping that you can hear our resilience in our music, and the way we play and record it.

We want people to have fun at our shows, and be able to let go for a few hours. We try to make our shows a mix of high-energy danceable music, and reflective emotional music. We just want to give something back to the people around us, because we already get so much.

Info

Band/Artist Name & Pronunciation: Color School

Recommended if you like: Color School sounds like the rebirth of the 45rpm, where every song is a single.Influenced by 70's pop where style was less important because people crossed over. Fan statements of who they sound like goes anywhere from The Beautiful South to Pavement to Mathew Sweet. If you ask the band, they say somewhere between The Ramones and Petula Clarke.

Story behind your band/artist name: The name comes from an art movement indigenous to DC in the late 50's early 60's. Being from DC, we wanted our name to tie to something unique about DC that is apolitical. The three of us have all been in past DC bands. We met as messngers, a common job for DC band members back in the day. Charles was playing in The High back Chairs (Dischord Records). Bill and I were in the Young Caucasians (Go Records, Wasp Records). It is a wonder we have never played together before. Well, not really... but time gives you that sense. I would love to tell you more. But really it might be best to do so when we meet. Otherwise, we are just pontificating. So, we look forward to a beer with you; either at one of our shows or one of yours.

Band Members: Jerry Herg- Vocals and Guitars, Bill Kalish- Drums, Paul Hyland- Bass,Percussion, Camille Miller-Vocals, guitar

What part of the DC region is the artist tied to and how? Where is the artist's current home base if not DC :DC,Bethesda,SilverSpring and Alexandria VA

At least 3 interesting/entertaining facts about the band related to persons/events in Washington DC area: 1)
Our first gig with this line up was literally in a hurricane at a hippie music and camp fest that we now lovingly call Mudstock. We made it through that, we can make it through anything.

2)
- We found our singer, while in France via a Sao Paulo day care bestie thingamabobber.

3)
- The name is hommage to the indigenous art movement called Washington School of Color And Light. As some painted the town red, they striped it.

4)
- Bill, the drummer, likes to bring smoked meat to practice.

The Electric Grandmother

DC Music Rocks Electric Grandmother

Shows

Featured On Episode

Info

Band/Artist Name & Pronunciation: The Electric Grandmother (these are all English words...?)

Recommended if you like: I mean, nothing, but we're most influenced by Ween, the Ramones, Bowie, and Eno

Story behind your band/artist name: Pete was in a band based in Cleveland when he moved to Hawaii and struggled to meet local musicians after relocating. He'd toyed with the idea of starting a solo project "until he moved back to the mainland" (and it eventually became his life's work). Randomly, we were talking about the Electric Grandmother TV movie one day and he remarked that it would be a good band name. So I suggested that he call his not-yet-embarked solo project the Electric Grandmotherand the rest is history.

Band Members: Pete Faust - lead vocals, synth, drum machine, misc.; Mary Alice Hamnett - backup vocals, lyrical editor, live visuals, eye candy, "a billion intangibles"

What part of the DC region is the artist tied to and how? Where is the artist's current home base if not DC : We moved to the DC region for day-job reasons 6 years ago. We had family and a few friends already here, so it was a natural fit. We've lived in upper northwest all our time here, but Pete spent summers with his family in the Wheaton area as a kid. I took one touristy strip when I was 14 and we stayed with family in Falls Church.

At least 3 interesting/entertaining facts about the band related to persons/events in Washington DC area: 1. For about ten minutes in 2011 a lot of Ethiopian restaurants hosted local music as a way to set themselves apart from other Ethiopian restaurants. I think this wasn't a terrible marriage for alt-country/acoustic or even inoffensive indie rock bands, but we didn't exactly--fit. But it was right after we moved here and we were really anxious to have a place to play (aside from our very first show at Velvet Lounge), so we signed up for a residency at the now-departed Dynasty on 14th St. It was kind of cool at first and the regulars seemed fascinated and got up and danced right away the first time we played there, but on our around week 3 we started to wear out our welcome and most of the regulars would clear out when we went on. The best part was when our friends in Mobius Strip (RIP them too) blew out the place's PA. There was smoke and everything!

2. So this hasn't been released to the public yet, but to accompany our next album, we have produced two short films that will feature members of DC's music and arts community. The films are related to the album insofar as the album tells the story of a man who loses his mind because his favorite cop drama is cancelled, so we wrote and produced an episode of it and a "rival" show. Our lead single for the album (which is the song I'm submitting) is the favorite show's theme song ("Police Department") and the music video will be an extended opening credits sequence featuring Frank Gomez of Psychic Subcreatures, Johnny Fantastic of (a ton of bands and his pet project) Stronger Sex, Paul Tsiaperas of Catscan! and performance artist Renee Reagan. Also my good friend Fran. :)

3. I dunno, I think my first two are pretty good.

Anything else we should know, or you want to share: So the big deal coming up is our new album and album release on September 6 at the Black Cat. We are putting a lot of focus on setting ourselves apart this time. As I've indicated above, we have composed an album that tells the tragic story of a man who loses his mind because his favorite cop drama gets cancelled. The album, of course is titled "Cancelled." This probably sounds silly conceptually, and it should because we are who we are, but it's actually the darkest, most serious work we've ever put out. The story will evoke a sense of the worst kind of loss in life--the loss of the thing that makes you happiest.

The thematic departure has also come with it an effort to branch out artistically. The film projects are a big part of this, but we are also putting more effort into the multimedia/visual components of our stage show as well. As I mentioned, we produced an episode of our hero's favorite TV show, called "Police Department" along with one of a rival cop drama, called "Cop Force."

We have always been different. We are known for a genre we invented called sitcom-core, where we perform songs mostly about our favorite TV shows and movies of our childhood against the backdrop of a visual accompaniment I put together.

We will accept nothing less than completely outdoing ourselves twice over in this new direction we are taking. On September 6 we will be playing the entire album in a one-night only engagement and will be showing both short films in their entirety.

Because we are attempting such a left turn, we really want to harness the support of local media, which has never been something we're good at naturally (despite being super cool and super nice). We are trying, for the time being, to keep a lot of our plans somewhat on the down-low, so there is not a lot of information on our website yet and our songs won't be available digitally until late August, but please feel free to contact me directly with any questions or for any more detail. Thanks in advance.

At least 3 interesting/entertaining facts about the band related to persons/events in Washington DC area: I'm related to 3 presidents: John Adams & John Quincy Adams, and James Buchanan, widely regarded as one of our worst presidents.
I once had the keys to a secret underground Russian nightclub in downtown DC, but I accidentally threw them out.
The first time I was ever pulled over in the city, I was eighteen and the cop was a Park Police Horse Mounted Unit officer. That's right, I got pulled over by a cop on a horse.

Anything else we should know, or you want to share: My mother, Melanie Hansen, is a singer as well, and she sings the harmony tracks on one of the songs on my debut EP, "Matchsticks".

Band/Artist Name & Pronunciation: The Fringe Benefits

Recommended if you like: Demo Lavato, Heart, Whitney Houston.  We play a lot of Motown, some disco, rock and new pop songs. We sound a lot like every song we perform however, we tend to "Mash-up" a lot of songs together. We don't like there to be time in between songs because our dance floors are full. It only takes 3 seconds for dancers to leave a floor. But it takes 20 seconds to fill it back up. THAT'S our gaol. Keep the floor packed and the arms up in the air at all times. I think people like the exercise anyways. It's pretty cool to see people dancing so hard and when it's time to leave, they've gotten a lot of exercise and won't forget what just happened.

Story behind your band/artist name: I wanted to start something that was not like all the other bands that I was in. NOT Classic Rock in other words. It seemed to me that 90% of the bands out there playing at establishments were all playing the same old songs. After dabbling with the idea of working with my son (lead guitarist of Nocturnal Rush) at the age of 13, we were just not going to see eye to eye. I ended up finding Bruce Moore through an on line band search. Bruce was pretty different. He plays synth on his guitar and because of that, we would be able to venture into a lot of different genres without having to bring on a whole lote of other musicians. Bruce and I hit it off right away. We picked up a drummer from my former band Drew Young. Then soon, through Drew, we found Julianna Smith. Wow, what a presence she had about her while at the same time being humble. The only peice left was a Bass player. We interviewed several before settling on Greg. I remember Julianna liking them all but us boys kept saying No, No, No. We wanted someone really good. When Greg auditioned, it was a not a question of if we would let him in. It was a question of wheather or not he'd join. Greg is very talented. Multi talented actually. After four years, Greg is now the bands drummer. lol He's actually better fit on drums than on bass. We decided to put Greg on drums because Greg knew another great bass player named TeeJay. TeeJay is an incredibly talented player. He knew all of our songs instantly. He also sings although we are just getting ready to throw him a couple tunes. He's fitting in perfectly. This band has five singers all of which take leads on songs. We are vocally strong. We consider Julianna to be the front person because not only is she an incredible singer, she's got the "IT" factor with her HUGE stage presence. She's got a connection to every audience we play for. Personally, I've never seen anyone walk into a room and read it like Julianna does. At our shows, it's all eyes on her. Even if I'm singing lead on a song, people just cannot take their eyes off her. It's frankly kinda strange singing a song and everyone is looking at the person next to you. he he he. Ya see, she's also got the moves. But you won't know what I'm talking about until you go to a show. It's pretty incredible. How she isn't world famous is beyond me. Anyway, It's been for wonderful years. The crowds are getting bigger and the shows are getting even more energetic every time.

Band Members: John Fichtner lead guitar and vocals, Bruce Moore Synth, guitar and Vocals, Julianna Smith Lead Vocals, Gregg Sales Drums, TeeJay Bass

What part of the DC region is the artist tied to and how? Where is the artist's current home base if not DC : Prince William County where we rehearse and regularly perform in all 3 sections of the county Woodbridge, Manassas and Haymarket.  We're based in Gainesville Va. We play weddings in DC and are hoping to break into the music scene in a bigger way as soon as your radio station helps get the word out. lol

At least 3 interesting/entertaining facts about the band related to persons/events in Washington DC area: Bruce is the unoffical band appointed "President" of Manassas. It's because of my involvement with the community including serving on the board of the Center for the Arts at the Candy Factory in Manassas as well as the board of the Prince William Chamber of Commerce and being an alumni of Leadership Prince William.

Greg plays in at least 2 other bands, "100 Rainy Days" where he fronts a police cover band and "Loud Town" a female fronted rock band. Greg is incredibly talented, easy to get along with and has good judgment. We trust Greg to tell us how to sing and play our songs. Many songs have more parts than we can play live, so Greg has a great sense of what can be left out and what is essential.

John, Greg, Bruce and Julianna are all type A personalities that want to take charge. We had some clashes but quickly found our lanes. Greg with the production, Julianna as a musical motivator and competitor, Bruce as a manager, John helps make decisions and leads the way. I used to have trouble defining John's magic, but I've settles on saying that that dude is full of life and it's contagious. Teejay is our newest member that follows right along with our personalities while quietly playing bass in a way that is making us all better musicians.

Anything else we should know, or you want to share: Brian always has positive things to say about artists, tracks, shows and music. I never hear him says- "that guy is a jerk" or" that track sucks". I really appreciate that he brings things to the show in a positive way. There are some great artists in the area and I got to hear some at his show a couple of months ago. Looking forward to the next one.

I'd also like to talk about our songs on the album. Each of 3 original songs with stories behind them and a cover of the "most controversial song in the country" - The Star Spangled Banner!

Band/Artist Name & Pronunciation: Free Lobster Buffet (frē ˈläbstər bəˈfā)

Recommended if you like: The Pietasters, Reel Big Fish, The Aquabats

Story behind your band/artist name: It was recommended by a friend of ours when we lamented that all the good names to put on a marquee were taken, like "Free Beer" and Bare Naked Ladies." The weird part is how many people think they'll get free lobster - or want it, for that matter.

Band Members: Chris B (Crispy) - bass, vocals; Joan - vocals; Lindsay - vocals; Ben - guitar; Chris "Sears" Swearingen - drums; Dan - tuba; Carson - trumpet; KC - Trombone, Josh - trombone

What part of the DC region is the artist tied to and how? Where is the artist's current home base if not DC : Members come from all around the DMV, but the band's home base has always been our rehearsal space on Capitol Hill. I formed my first band in DC in 1989, a psychedelic punk outfit called The Freaky Boot.

At least 3 interesting/entertaining facts about the band related to persons/events in Washington DC area: We filmed the video for our song "Flat Box Life" on a Saturday afternoon at the Woodbridge IKEA, but they were super busy and we were buying stuff so they just left us alone.

The band formed after the three founders drunkenly boasted at a school fundraiser that a live band would kick ass over a DJ so the organizers hired us on the spot and we had to step up (Ben Trajtenberg, bass player for Cosimc Romp, was one of those founders but moved away to Dubai for several years).

The original horn section for FLB was made up of musicians from the Commandant's Own, the Marine Drum and Bugle Corp stationed at the historic Marine Barracks on Capitol Hill.
