Info

Band/Artist Name & Pronunciation: Paige (PAYJ) Powell (rhymes with "towel" and "vowel")

Recommended if you like: Voice like Christine McVie of Fleetwood Mac, some power vocals like Annie Lennox

Story behind your band/artist name: When she was pregnant with me, my mother attended a play and the name of the lead actress was announced, "Peg Woofington" and my mother misunderstood him and thought he said "Paige". She decided at that moment to give me that name!

Band Members: Just me! I'm a solo singer/songwriter who plays guitar

What part of the DC region is the artist tied to and how? Where is the artist's current home base if not DC : I live in Bailey's Crossroads, so I'm inside the beltway

At least 3 interesting/entertaining facts about the band related to persons/events in Washington DC area:When I started hosting open mics for the Songwriters' Association of Washington (SAW) I wondered what I would say between the performances. At the time, I could recall about 5 jokes that I knew, and that got me through the evening. People seemed to like the jokes, so now that's become my trademark as a host. I decided not to tell any dirty jokes or jokes with nudity, sex, or alcohol, because there might be children in the audience. I was so glad because the very next time, a songwriter came and brought his two young daughters. I get most of my jokes from Reader's Digest books of jokes and from my funny life! What's extra funny is that at the New Deal Café, where it's VERY noisy, at one point someone shushed the audience when I started to tell a joke, and at another time, I was stepping up on stage and someone started the audience chanting, "JOKE, JOKE, JOKE!" Once, I started to sing my third song, and asked if they would like to hear a song or a joke, and they chose "tell a joke!" to my disappointment!

Anything else we should know, or you want to share: My day job is designing websites and I've designed several for area musicians and songwriters including Joshua Rich, Frank Hogans, Christine Abi-Najm, Don Micallef, and of course, my own website, paigepowellmusic.com. I've also helped a few songwriters with recommendations and adjustments for their current websites. My philosophy is that each song should have its own page so that the user can hear the song and read the lyrics at the same time. Also, if you are pitching a specific song, you can send the link for that song's page without the user having to hunt for it.
Before I record a song, I bring it to one of the Songwriter's Toolbox meetings to get critical feedback on it from my fellow songwriters. If there is something clunky about a line or if there's any part of the song that they didn't understand, I can change it so that it communicates what I intended to say in the song. Every time I've brought a song to the meeting, I find out what needs to be done to make that song the best it can be. This valuable feedback is what many songwriters pay a lot of money for ($$!!) and these meetings are FREE! You don't even have to be a member of SAW to attend! To attend the next meeting, just go to saw.org > Events Calendar > Workshops & Critiques.

Info

Band/Artist Name & Pronunciation: The Radiographers (The Ray-Dee-Ah-Graf-Ers)

Recommended if you like: Vampire Weekend, The Kooks, The Strokes

Story behind your band/artist name: The group was heavily associated with the college station WMUC 88.1 FM while studying at The University of Maryland: playing at their parties, performing on air, and even hosting radio shows of their own (Dermatology was Devin and Mike's most recent show where they talked about indie rock and skin care). Hoping to stay true to their roots, the band named themselves "Talk Radio". Unfortunately, some band from New Jersey (with less than 300 total online plays might I add) threatened to send us a cease and desist letter for "stealing" their name. We then changed our name to "The Radiographers" after trying to make up a word involving radio. As it turned out, Radiographer was an actual word meaning someone who operates an X-ray machine. Now we get followed by actual radiographers on twitter who must think it strange that a band is named after their profession.

Band Members: Mike: Guitar, Lead/Backing Vocals, Whistling, Synth ; Devin: Guitar, Lead/Backing Vocals, Synth ; Drew: Bass, Backing Vocals, Synth ; Kevin: Drums & Percussion

What part of the DC region is the artist tied to and how? Where is the artist's current home base if not DC : College Park. We currently live here and formed the band at the University of Maryland.

At least 3 interesting/entertaining facts about the band related to persons/events in Washington DC area:1- We opened for 2-Chainz at Maryland Stadium
2- Mike successfully auditioned on American Idol in the Annapolis tryout location (Lionel Richie said he sounded like a young Rod Stewart).
3- We were involved with the sustainability committee while at UMD and even lobbied with them in Annapolis trying to pass the fracking moratorium.

Anything else we should know, or you want to share: All our music is clean and FCC acceptable EXCEPT "The Truth". We have a radio friendly version of the song in our Dropbox link. Our most radio friendly songs are "Waves Home (Summertime)", "Trying to Be Heard", "Roll Along", "My Survival", and "Missy May.

Much of the music you hear online will differ from our music we play live. When performing, we integrate synthesizers and other electronic effects not heard on the EP or album.
