Info

Band/Artist Name & Pronunciation: Caustic Casanova - (CAW-stick Cas-a-NO-va)

Recommended if you like: Melvins, Queens of the Stone Age, Rush, Black Sabbath, Torche, Kyuss, Clutch, Boris, Soundgarden

Story behind your band/artist name: Our name was inspired by a fellow college dorm-mate of two of the founding members, one of the greatest Casanovas they ever knew! We like alliteration so we thought Caustic Casanova sounded cool.

Band Members: Andrew Yonki - Guitar, Francis Beringer - Bass/Vocals, Stefanie Zaenker - Drums/Vocals

What part of the DC region is the artist tied to and how? Where is the artist's current home base if not DC : Francis and Stefanie live in Northeast DC. Francis is originally from Arlington, VA. Andrew has been in the area since 2004 after attending American University, and Stefanie has been in DC since 2008.

At least 3 interesting/entertaining facts about the band related to persons/events in Washington DC area: Stefanie works at the 9:30 Club.

While all three members have lived in DC the majority of their time in the area, we have always practiced in Arlington, in the basement of Francis' childhood home.

We all love ramen and BBQ! Francis' favorite DC restaurant is Toki Underground, Stefanie's is DCity Smokehouse, and Andrew's is the Black Squirrel because it "made me a believer in the power of a hamburger after five years of vegetarianism".

Andrew was a big fan of our band before he joined! The first night that he saw us play live Stefanie gave him a ride home after the show, where he crammed himself into the backseat between her drums, and they bonded over their mutual love of the band Mastodon!

Anything else we should know, or you want to share: All three members have been to or lived in Guatemala - that's why we chose to feature the Quetzal (Guatemala's national bird) on 'Breaks', our most recent album cover.

Info

Band/Artist Name: Cartoon Weapons

Recommended if you like: The Mars Volta

Story behind your band/artist name:

--Developing a band name is the worst. I mean throwing ideas out there is fun for awhile, but eventually you realize this is going to be the word or phrase that defines you for virgin listeners for a lifetime, and that can be a truly terrifying thought. We had basically given up and said, "the band name will find us." Cut to a few weeks later, and we were all playing together (in different acts) at a WV music festival. Hanging out by a creek, Garrett Gleason just said "Cartoon Weapons" out of nowhere, in the middle of a stream of ideas. I'll be damned if it didn't perfectly encapsulate the bonkers intensity and calculated perfection that we strive for with our sound. Hell, I'm jealous that I didn't come up with it. Kudos, Garrett!

Band Members:

--Garrett Gleason (Guitar, Loops, Vox), Zack Be (Bass, Keyboards, Samples, Vox), and William Wadsworth (Drums, Percussion)

What part of the DC region is the artist tied to and how? Where is the artist's current home base if not DC :

--We consider ourselves a DC area band, however, we all live just outside the limits in Wheaton/Silver Spring, MD. Crucially, this gives us in-home practice space AND we can host DIY concerts regularly.

At least 3 interesting/entertaining facts about the band related to persons/events in Washington DC area:

--1) Zack and Garrett are housemates at a spot called Baxter BLDG, which Zack promotes as a DIY space for live music, booking roughly 2 - 3 shows a month. MANY local DC bands and many touring bands from around the country (and even a few from overseas) have come through to perform at the illustrious Baxter BLDG (which is, in fact, a detached garage behind the actual house).
--2) We record all of our own records in-house! This is crucial because it helps us grow as both musicians AND musical technicians. We are currently working on our new EP, but aside from that, Zack has branched out to producing albums for other local DC artists and Garrett is doing session work for many different area artists.
--3) This entire band was founded on improv. William and Garrett both have deep jazz backgrounds - including degrees to that effect - and the band originally formed as a series of loose jams between like-minded musicians. Although we now focus predominantly on dense, complex, and catchy songwriting, we still have several tunes in our repertoire that are note-for-note reconstructions of improv jams that we happened to get recorded in the practice space. Part of the fun for a live audience is trying to figure out which songs fit that pedigree, and when we are or aren't improvising!
--4) One of our members always wears a jumpsuit. Ask about it, and he'll give you an earful.

Anything else we should know, or you want to share:

--We've played a lot of great shows as Cartoon Weapons, opening for or playing alongside of, amazing acts such as: ttng, LITE, Giraffes? Giraffes!, Star Death and the White Dwarfs, Bent Knee, Invalids, Drop Electric, and many of our awesome DC friends!!

--We are working on a new EP for release in 2017!

--Beyond that, this year Zack is launching a solo project with his debut EP, and Garrett is releasing an LP for his side project "Gentle Men"! It's going to be an awesome year!

What part of the DC region is the artist tied to and how? Where is the artist's current home base if not DC : Matt Berry grew up and still lives in Germantown, MD and Andy Hamburger lives in Takoma Park, MD and both play and have played with tons of bands and artists (Cover and Original) in the DC area!

At least 3 interesting/entertaining facts about the band related to persons/events in Washington DC area: Berry hates highways and traffic with a passion and he is a master at finding back roads around the city.

Berry can also be seen frequenting Blues Alley as he is a huge Jazz fan.

Andy has probably played in every single live music venue in the city...seriously.

At one show, Everhart had his jacket stolen and had to have someone drive an hour into the city at 2am to get him his spare keys. It was also, February so he was freezing!!

Berry played a show with Derek Evry at the Black Cat and was told he couldn't park at the club so he took 30 min to find a parking spot with just enough time to get his gear on stage and immediately play the show. As he stepped onto the stage, he ripped his pants from the thigh all the way up. Played the show, had a hot dog and a beer and went home!

Band/Artist Name & Pronunciation: Coral Benders, Core-ul Ben-durs

Recommended if you like: The Growlers, Ty Segall, Black Angels, Thee Oh Sees, Mystic Braves, Pixies, Brian Jonestown Massacre

Story behind your band/artist name: We formerly played as the Virginia Slims in homage to NoVa, where three of us first lived upon moving to DC. We changed our name when recording our first album (in fear of the Big Tobacco copyright), oscillating between “Coral Bleaching” (two of us work full time jobs in the environment sphere) and “Atomic Dunes” (among a hundred others). Coral Benders resulted to encompass both our surf melodies and fuzzy, tone-bending havoc. We’ve also played a few shows under the moniker “Hot Garbage.”

Band Members: Brennan “DJ” Duckett (guitar/vocals); Jacob “JBUTT” Butler (bass/vocals); Shawn “Doctor” Whites (guitar/vocals); Matt “Safari” Ciferri (drums); Patrick “P-Funk” Nease (organ/keys/tambourine)

What part of the DC region is the artist tied to and how? Where is the artist's current home base if not DC : Most of us reside within the H-Street Corridor; one member lives in NoVA.

At least 3 interesting/entertaining facts about the band related to persons/events in Washington DC area: Van Hillard of Park Snakes helped us get our start in 2016 by hosting us almost monthly for a year at Dr. Clock’s Nowhere Bar in AdMo (R.I.P. Dr. Clock’s).

One of the best shows we’ve played was a private party at an old armory for a newly-tenured Johns Hopkins professor. The crowd was a bunch of Summer of Love survivors but possibly featured the most dancing we’ve had at a show (including some high school prom-esque couples’ dancing). We think the host had the wrong band when he booked us, but we ended up signing autographs at the end of the night so we think it worked out well.

We host a Halloween house show every year that (only sometimes) gets broken up by the cops.

Anything else we should know, or you want to share: We’ve been known to “get gorked” on stage - our multi-instrumentalist Pat has been known to roll around like an animal. Our newest single "Supermoon" is out now on all streaming services, and we've got new music planned for later this summer/fall!

Band/Artist Name & Pronunciation: Dangerous Curves

Recommended if you like: AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Motley Crew, Megadeth, Metallica, Triumph, Van Halen

Story behind your band/artist name: Before this band formed, Chris and Randy were in another band. When the lead singer had to bail suddenly on an upcoming gig, they scrambled to find a replacement. The previously elusive John Jamison stepped up and hit it out of the ballpark. Soon after, on one of their many motorcycle outings, Chris went down and became a REAL metal man - rods and screws to a multiple leg fracture. Doing what they love again within weeks, Randy and Chris were jamming outside on the porch at Hershey's, where they had their first (and only) gig with John. Who walks in, but John himself. He signed Chris' cast "Dangerous Curves." They formed a band. The rest is history! This very cast is donned for every gig, to this day and forever more, by Randy's mascot, the Abominable Snowman, which sits with pride by his kick drum.

What part of the DC region is the artist tied to and how? Where is the artist's current home base if not DC : I live in Southern Maryland. Many of gigs are in DC: Hamilton, Clydes, National Mall, VOA, etc.

At least 3 interesting/entertaining facts about the band related to persons/events in Washington DC area: Many of my first early gigs as a working musician were in bars and clubs around DC : DC9, Rock n Roll Hotel, Bossa. I also used to play jazz gigs with trumpeter DeAndrey Howard (who now runs Alice's Jazz & Cultural Society in NE). Many of my first gigs as the Solo Trio were in DC. I used to have a monthly Solo Trio residency at the Dew Drop Inn--where I met and collaborated with DC staple underground rocker- Devin Ocampo. I also used to have a residency doing solo drum set performances in Dynasty off 14th and U NW. Ted Zook and the Lost Civilization project were responsible for that one. Nothing too crazy ever really happened . . .. I can't remember if it did!

I wrote a song about refugees a few years back and was selected to play on the National Mall for the DCRally4Refugees on the anniversary of MLK's I Have a Dream Speech on the Mall. That was rad!

One night during a gig with Brent & Co. at the Hamilton Loft, the Tedeski Trucks Band showed up after their gig at the Warner Theatre and finished our set with us. They were doing a three day run a t Warner and I hung with them for the rest of the weekend. That was rad too!

SJD is a program of lectures, concerts, workshops, and masterclasses that highlight the congruency of jazz and democracy and focus on the role of improvisation and innovation in the expansion of freedom and the betterment of the human condition. At the center of the program are fully improvised concerts by master musicians Paul F. Murphy (drums) and Larry Willis (piano), with guest performances by poet laureate Jere Carroll and multi-instrumentalist Dominic Fragman. In Fall 2017, SJD was in residence at St. Mary's College of Maryland. The school recognized the events of the residency as historic. Oxford University Press' Grove Music Dictionary has noted the music as a new direction in jazz and art.

Fragman is a Zildjian, Regal Tip, AHEAD, and Wicked Chops artist. What’s Up Magazine calls him “a kung fu master of the drums. He is the next generation of trailblazing drummers and pushes the boundaries of rhythm exploring music from all angles with his instrument and free spirit.” Zildjian will be recommending another of Fragman’s programs, The Spirit of Innovation & Drumming, to international drum festivals. The programming presented by Fragman and master drummer Paul F. Murphy includes master classes, clinics, and performances that focus on developing improvisation and innovative approaches to the drum set. Murphy and Fragman will be releasing a drum method book in November entitled, "The Continuum Method: Innovation, Freedom, & Drumming" which focuses on the concepts of the Spirit of Innovation & Drumming: history, tradition, craft, and progress. Murphy and Fragman also present their work as clinicians, the most recent happening at Chuck Levin’s Washington Music Center with Zildjian and Wicked Chops.

Fragman is currently the “face” and feature artist of the Wicked Chops Practice Pad. The Wicked Chops Practice Pad is a revolutionary drum practice pad invented by master drummer, Paul F. Murphy. Murphy is a documented innovator in drumming. He has recorded as a leader at CBS and RCA and has been included in several Oxford University Press music reference publications for his contributions to music and drumming. He was also the premier soloist at Louie Bellson's wedding to Francine Bellson. The Wicked Chops team brought the pad to market in December through AHEAD and Big Bang Distribution. It is now available in 172 countries. Fragman has been featured with the pad at NAMM18, the Delaware Drum Show, the Connecticut Drum Show, and on Drumeo and Drum Talk TV. Fragman is featured on Drum Talk TV 1-2 times per week for Wicked Chops Live. The show averages about 10,000 views per episode.

Fragman is also a guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter. He has lived and worked in Nashville, Manhattan, and Los Angeles and has about 4 albums of original commercial material. He has received international radio, TV, and press coverage for his Solo Trio Project where he plays guitar, drum set, and sings simultaneously. All live, no looping. As the Solo Trio and a songwriter, he has performed on the National Mall, at Rams Head OnStage, Rams Head Live, and the Bluebird Cafe. Videos of the Solo Trio have been on the front page of Reddit, on TV in the US and Japan, and have been written about by Guitar Player Magazine, Classic Rock Magazine, and a host of others.

Fragman has been involved in numerous diverse activities from study with legendary pianist Cecil Taylor who invited Fragman to play at the state side 2013 Kyoto Award ceremony, to publication by Oxford University Press, and lectures at the Voice of America headquarters in Washington, DC.

Band/Artist Name & Pronunciation: Easy Thrill - Easy Thrill

Recommended if you like: Melodic, pop rock. Been told like we've sounded similar to indie rock bands, Green Day, Nirvana, foo fighters but that's just a handful of listeners.

Story behind your band/artist name: All of us have been pursuing music our entire lives and have had several acts and projects before we all met. I (Paul) knew a bassist (David) and happened to meet another guitarist/singer (Joseph) who found our drummer Brendan. All of us have wanted to make music our entire lives but lacked the ability and team to do so. When we all jammed together, we knew this one was for real. I (Paul) play guitar and sing, as well as write some of our songs with a more punk-ish heavy sound but with a melodic tune. Joseph also writes and sings/plays guitar with a more indie pop style. Fusing our two stylistic preferences together with the best drummer (Brendan) I have ever met locked us together. Having two singers who write different music with very different voices gives our band very different sounding songs, but it has proven to be a real asset for us. We searched many studios to find the right place for our debut EP after playing shows and practicing together for many months, and when we found Inner Ear studios, we knew it was the one. DC legend Don Zientara recorded and produced our EP, and it was one of the most proud experiences in my entire life. We put everything we had, time, money, and hundreds of hours of hard work on our EP and we want to show it to as many people as we can. Music is the most important thing to us. We somehow manage to balance all this with our studies (as we are all in college right now).

Band Members: Paul Riccio - (vocals + guitar), Joseph Allen (vocals + guitar), Brendan Lannig (drums) and David Dell'Isola (bass)

What part of the DC region is the artist tied to and how? Where is the artist's current home base if not DC : Foggy Bottom

At least 3 interesting/entertaining facts about the band related to persons/events in Washington DC area: 1. Our drummer Brendan recorded all of the drums PERFECTLY for our EP in one take for almost every track.

2. Our bassist, David, has been known to wear a "Cow" onesie but usually works himself up to the point of a heat stroke and inevitably takes most of his clothes off.

3. We were almost called "the Vegans" but could not (thankfully) do so legally due to the volume of meat we consume at various local food (mostly microwaveable).

Anything else we should know, or you want to share: It would be an enormous blessing for a review, play, or anything you could do to get our music out.

Our most popular songs off our record are:
1. "Day by Day"
2. "Wild Hair"
But since we posted our music online "in the Rain" and "morning breath" have gotten a surge in attention.

The Deli Magazine, from New York City, commented that the “sick riffs and solos, growling vocals, and high-octane drumming” of Fellowcraft’s debut EP Get Up Young Phoenix “make for some juicy rock and roll."
