What part of the DC region is the artist tied to and how? Where is the artist's current home base if not DC : I live in Southern Maryland. Many of gigs are in DC: Hamilton, Clydes, National Mall, VOA, etc.
At least 3 interesting/entertaining facts about the band related to persons/events in Washington DC area: Many of my first early gigs as a working musician were in bars and clubs around DC : DC9, Rock n Roll Hotel, Bossa. I also used to play jazz gigs with trumpeter DeAndrey Howard (who now runs Alice's Jazz & Cultural Society in NE). Many of my first gigs as the Solo Trio were in DC. I used to have a monthly Solo Trio residency at the Dew Drop Inn--where I met and collaborated with DC staple underground rocker- Devin Ocampo. I also used to have a residency doing solo drum set performances in Dynasty off 14th and U NW. Ted Zook and the Lost Civilization project were responsible for that one. Nothing too crazy ever really happened . . .. I can't remember if it did!
I wrote a song about refugees a few years back and was selected to play on the National Mall for the DCRally4Refugees on the anniversary of MLK's I Have a Dream Speech on the Mall. That was rad!
One night during a gig with Brent & Co. at the Hamilton Loft, the Tedeski Trucks Band showed up after their gig at the Warner Theatre and finished our set with us. They were doing a three day run a t Warner and I hung with them for the rest of the weekend. That was rad too!
Anything else we should know, or you want to share: Dominic Fragman is cofounder of the Spirit of Jazz & Democracy (SJD). SJD is a program of lectures, concerts, workshops, and masterclasses that highlight the congruency of jazz and democracy and focus on the role of improvisation and innovation in the expansion of freedom and the betterment of the human condition. At the center of the program are fully improvised concerts by master musicians Paul F. Murphy (drums) and Larry Willis (piano), with guest performances by poet laureate Jere Carroll and multi-instrumentalist Dominic Fragman. In Fall 2017, SJD was in residence at St. Mary's College of Maryland. The school recognized the events of the residency as historic. Oxford University Press' Grove Music Dictionary has noted the music as a new direction in jazz and art.
Fragman is a Zildjian, Regal Tip, AHEAD, and Wicked Chops artist. What’s Up Magazine calls him “a kung fu master of the drums. He is the next generation of trailblazing drummers and pushes the boundaries of rhythm exploring music from all angles with his instrument and free spirit.” Zildjian will be recommending another of Fragman’s programs, The Spirit of Innovation & Drumming, to international drum festivals. The programming presented by Fragman and master drummer Paul F. Murphy includes master classes, clinics, and performances that focus on developing improvisation and innovative approaches to the drum set. Murphy and Fragman will be releasing a drum method book in November entitled, "The Continuum Method: Innovation, Freedom, & Drumming" which focuses on the concepts of the Spirit of Innovation & Drumming: history, tradition, craft, and progress. Murphy and Fragman also present their work as clinicians, the most recent happening at Chuck Levin’s Washington Music Center with Zildjian and Wicked Chops.
Fragman is currently the “face” and feature artist of the Wicked Chops Practice Pad. The Wicked Chops Practice Pad is a revolutionary drum practice pad invented by master drummer, Paul F. Murphy. Murphy is a documented innovator in drumming. He has recorded as a leader at CBS and RCA and has been included in several Oxford University Press music reference publications for his contributions to music and drumming. He was also the premier soloist at Louie Bellson's wedding to Francine Bellson. The Wicked Chops team brought the pad to market in December through AHEAD and Big Bang Distribution. It is now available in 172 countries. Fragman has been featured with the pad at NAMM18, the Delaware Drum Show, the Connecticut Drum Show, and on Drumeo and Drum Talk TV. Fragman is featured on Drum Talk TV 1-2 times per week for Wicked Chops Live. The show averages about 10,000 views per episode.
Fragman is also a guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter. He has lived and worked in Nashville, Manhattan, and Los Angeles and has about 4 albums of original commercial material. He has received international radio, TV, and press coverage for his Solo Trio Project where he plays guitar, drum set, and sings simultaneously. All live, no looping. As the Solo Trio and a songwriter, he has performed on the National Mall, at Rams Head OnStage, Rams Head Live, and the Bluebird Cafe. Videos of the Solo Trio have been on the front page of Reddit, on TV in the US and Japan, and have been written about by Guitar Player Magazine, Classic Rock Magazine, and a host of others.
Fragman has been involved in numerous diverse activities from study with legendary pianist Cecil Taylor who invited Fragman to play at the state side 2013 Kyoto Award ceremony, to publication by Oxford University Press, and lectures at the Voice of America headquarters in Washington, DC.
