Info

Band/Artist Name & Pronunciation: Dave Ihmels. The last name is actually pronounced "EEE-muhls" . Many people get this wrong and call me "immels" although I am used to that and have gotten over it.

Recommended if you like: Beck, Nick Drake, Neil Young, Devendra Banhart, The Byrds, Vic Chesnutt, Mac Demarco

Story behind your band/artist name: Well...my middle name is Ross because I was born on Flag Day, and my parents have a sense of humor. A boy named Betsy :)

Band Members: I perform solo or as a duo. I play guitar, keyboards, I sing, play percussion, bass, and I produce mostly mid-fi in my home studio. When I am performing as a duo I perform with Todd Baker (from the DC band Cravin' Dogs) on electric violin. Other times I perform with Ryan Ferris on guitar. Ryan and I write a lot of songs together.

What part of the DC region is the artist tied to and how? Where is the artist's current home base if not DC : I have lived in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria for the last 7 years. But I have lived in the DC area since 1995, so I have also lived in DC proper, and in Bethesda and Rockville. I occupy the rare air of "I like all 3, the D, M, and the V"

At least 3 interesting/entertaining facts about the band related to persons/events in Washington DC area: My favorite place to play is in someone's house, although Evening Star in Del Ray is sort of my home base for gigging. I live literally a block away from it. This makes load-in a pain because I still have to load the car and then drive a block and then unload. Maybe I should invest in a hand-truck! My wife is also a singer songwriter (Celeste Starchild), and sometimes I drag her on stage or force her to sing on my recordings. We also like to play volunteer gigs for hospitals and things like that. We have a duo act of mostly country duets and familiar stuff that we like to do. My last album, The Severe Angels, was produced locally by Dave Mallen at Innovation Station (Annandale). Lately I have been self-producing and releasing singles on Soundcloud, and using all sorts of people from other DC bands as back-up musicians. Two of my songs have been played on Billy Hancock's Tune Time show for WERA FM 96.7. "Rubber Mask" from The Severe Angels and "I Don't Care Anymore (So Neither Should You)" which is on Soundcloud.

Anything else we should know, or you want to share: I am a student of songwriters, so I listen to artists like The Sherman Brothers, Vic Chesnutt, Leonard Cohen, Warren Zevon, Townes Van Zandt, Dylan... The heavies. By the time I am 80 years old, I will be excellent.

Recommended if you like: U2, Muse, Foo Fighters

Band Members: Sean - Guitar/Vocals, Ian - Bass, Torro - Drums

What part of the DC region is the artist tied to and how? Where is the artist's current home base if not DC : Based in Bethesda, all of us come from within the Beltway (Bethesda, Takoma Park, NoVa).

At least 3 interesting/entertaining facts about the band related to persons/events in Washington DC area: The DCeivers have played in nearly every neighborhood of the DC metro area between private functions, clubs, and parties. By our count, we're only missing LeDroit Park, 7 Corners, Bailey's Crossroads, and District Heights.

When Sean was buying a guitar for the record at Chuck Levin's, Ian MacKaye walked up and just started talking to us for like 30 minutes and encouraging our efforts, and said, "You guys need to keep making records," not knowing that the guitar was being bought in front of him for the express purpose to turn around and go back into the studio that night.

Every member of the DCeivers has worked at our respective favorite venues in the are, 930 Club, Nissan Pavillion, Black Cat.

Anything else we should know, or you want to share: People always asks us if the tower in our logo is a number of different radio towers in the area. It's not any specific one.

FEATURED IN EPISODES

INFO

Band/Artist Name & Pronunciation: Dan Wolff & The Muddy Crows

Recommended if you like: John Mayer, Jason Mraz, Tom Petty

Story behind your band/artist name: We liked the idea of a band name in the form of having a distinctive THE followed by an adjective and then a noun- much like The Rolling Stones or The Traveling Wilburys. But, to emphasize our folkier roots we wanted a rustic, even gritty, name. So, after considering The Crooked Crows, The Rusty Buckets, and The Muddy Boots- and realizing that most of these were already taken- we combined the more unique elements of the name and became THE MUDDY CROWS.

Band Members: Dan Wolff - Lead Vocals/Guitar | Steve Mead - Keyboard/Vocals | Eric Grabow - Bass | Dan Perriello - Drums/Vocals | Tom O'Donnell - Lead Guitar | Tiffany Shanta - Violin

What part of the DC region is the artist tied to and how? Where is the artist's current home base if not DC : While none of us are originally from this region, we all live in the area: some in Maryland, some in Virginia. And though only one actually lives in DC proper, we have always considered ourselves to be a "DC band."

At least 3 interesting/entertaining facts about the band related to persons/events in Washington DC area: *Much like the politicians on the hill, our band is comprised of representatives from various states including Ohio, Wisconsin, New York, Virginia, and Oregon.
*We have played a venue called The Bayou, which sits on Pennsylvania Avenue, several times. Each time we tweeted @POTUS, letting the first family know that we were playing, literally just down the street. Disappointingly, they never showed.
*Last year, our band took the stage at the National Capital Barbecue Battle. A few hotdog pieces still remained on-stage, courtesy of the Nathan's 2016 Hot Dog Eating Contest, which featured the world record holder Joey Chestnut annihilating 73 1/2 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes.

Band Members: Erin - vocals, guitar, keys Chris - vocals, guitar, synth Ben - drums, backing vocals Clinton - Bass

What part of the DC region is the artist tied to and how? Where is the artist's current home base if not DC : we live in a house/venue in NW

At least 3 interesting/entertaining facts about the band related to persons/events in Washington DC area: Erin and Chris who are married now, met at a Hip Hop club in DC in 1999. They dated for like two weeks back then.

We put on FuzzFactory shows at the house we all share, presenting some of our favourite local and regional bands, themed events, food, and fun.

Ben grew up at the Claude Moore Farm in Sterling, VA. It's about 350 acres of outdoor wonderland.

Chris used to be a DC bike messenger so he pretty much knows how to get everywhere. He was in one of the buildings that received an Anthrax letter and had to be treated for the thrax...

Ben has lived here forever, but Chris and Erin just moved back to DC this past summer. We have all spent a lot of time in the van together though touring the country.

Anything else we should know, or you want to share: We're working on new recordings at Inner Ear with Don Zientara, and we've got an ambitious live recording project surprise that we'll be working on this winter.

Band/Artist Name: Fellow Creatures

Recommended if you like: Bjork, Radiohead, The Talking Heads

Story behind your band/artist name: Our band aims to be a big-tent band: a little dancey, a little obscure, a little pop, a little noisey. So the name is about that: we're trying to be as inclusive as possible. Porpoises and moths and amoebas; all are welcome.

Band Members: Will (guitar and vocal); Sam (keys and vocal); David (drums); Rishi (bass)

What part of the DC region is the artist tied to and how? Where is the artist's current home base if not DC : Sam and Will both live in Mount Rainier, MD. Rishi and David both live in DC. Save for David, the whole band has spent almost their whole lives in the DC area.

At least 3 interesting/entertaining facts about the band related to persons/events in Washington DC area:

1.) Sam's high school band once opened for Jimmy's Chicken Shack at his prom's after party. They were pretty nice, except they wouldn't let Sam's band use their sound system.

2.) One prominent instrument on our album is a toy piano that Sam bought for $30 off of craigslist and outfitted with a pickup.

3.) Rishi mostly plays bass in FC, but he's actually a spectacular guitar player as well.

4.) Will grew up in Mount Rainier, MD, where he still lives and is kinda a local celebrity both for his music and his work with with Mount Rainier bike co-op.

Band/Artist Name & Pronunciation: Hayley Fahey,  HAY-lee  FAY-hee

Recommended if you like: Bonnie Raitt, Eva Cassidy, Zac Brown Band

Story behind your band/artist name: We thought a lot about this one... (haha). Hayley wanted to perform as an artist, but backed by a band of world class musicians on her original songs. So the band name was simple: the Hayley Fahey Band.

Band Members: Hayley Fahey Band: Hayley Fahey (Vocals, Acoustic Guitar, Keys) - John Trupp (Electric Guitar) - Matt Tredwell (Drums)

What part of the DC region is the artist tied to and how? Where is the artist's current home base if not DC : Derwood, MD - Hayley got her start performing at school, and the local venue, Outta the Way Cafe when she was a kid, and now some of her music students also perform there as well. Matt and John both reside in Derwood too, so there's a community home base here.

At least 3 interesting/entertaining facts about the band related to persons/events in Washington DC area: The Hayley Fahey Band was formed in 2016. John Trupp (electric guitar) produced Hayley's first album, "Sweet Red" before the band was fully formed. The first full band single, "Good Kind of Crazy," showcases the band energy on an upbeat original tune. The first full band album is set for release in 2017.

In addition to performing with her band, Hayley has also performed alongside with a variety of DC artists including Daryl Davis, Keith Grimes, Wes Crawford, Dan Quinn, Patty Reese, Sandra Dean, and more at Bethesda Blues and Jazz. She played the Hamilton for a Beatles Love songs tribute show, with the Lofgren Brothers, Véronneau, Julia Nixon, Todd Wright, Taylor Carson, and more, as well as other Newmyer Flyer events. In her hometown at Outta the Way Cafe she has played events with other great musicians such as the Sidleys, Stig, her Uncle Patrick Fahey (mandolin), and her original accompanist, her Dad.

Story behind your band/artist name:

--We needed a name. One of us took an hour to brainstorm about 20 names. About 60% of those names turned out to be taken. The remainder were sent to two other original band members, who both independently picked the same name. We took that as a sign.

Band Members:

--Scott McKnight, Bill Williams, Arch Alcantara, Jim Faris, and Steve Woehrle

What part of the DC region is the artist tied to and how? Where is the artist's current home base if not DC :

--Band members live in Rockville, Silver Spring, Alexandria, and NEDC. We rehearse in Silver Spring.

At least 3 interesting/entertaining facts about the band related to persons/events in Washington DC area:

--1) Three of us have lived here many years and have played together in various bands going back as far as 40 years.

--2) DC bands that we've played with include: Last Train Home, Kevin Johnson and the Linemen, The Neighbors, and Naughty Pine.

--3) DC area clubs that band members have played in the past include: the old 9:30, the new 9:30, DC space, The Bayou, the current Birchmere, the previous Birchmere, The Gentry, the Twist and Shout, and countless other bars and honky-tonks that are long gone now.

Anything else we should know, or you want to share:

--We play in different configurations, based on the show. Anywhere from two pieces to five. Acoustic to full-on electric. We primarily play originals in different styles, but have played tribute shows and have a lot of old covers in our list as well. Covers tend to be oddball and often played in new ways. "Acoustic, Electric, Eclectic." That's us.
