3 incredibly interesting and entertaining DC related facts about the band? Give us good stuff, not normal bio stuff!:    Our lead guitar player, Nick, uses b-benders (known by country telecaster players) to create pedal steel licks that we weave into our tunes. Our rhythm section (Brian LeFleur on drums and Burt Glassman on bass) used to gig around town together in a band known as Loser Leaves Town. And our lead singer put out a solo album a couple years back of acoustic tunes under his own name, Kevin Fahy.

3 incredibly interesting and entertaining DC related facts about the band? Give us good stuff, not normal bio stuff!: We once managed to shove nearly all the band's equipment into a Car2Go. There was barely space to drive. It was kind of incredible. .

The first band Carlos ever played and sang in was a mariachi band in Phoenix AZ. Mariachi --> Indie rock!

We have a habit of locking the keys in the car after shows while packing up. This has happened enough times that we've taken to stashing a few extra keys in equipment and bags just in case...

Anything else we should know, or you want to share?: This first album was written / arranged, performed, recorded and mixed by Carlos, over what seemed like an eternity. The songs change somewhat live as the other members bring their own sounds and feeling to them.

The songs range from sentimental ballad-y compositions (Fireflies) to angry denouncements (Blissful Idiot) to more electronic rock (Phosphorescence).

Many of the themes on the album involve love, loss, and relationships in general. The first song (and somewhat title track) "The Margins" is about isolation and failing. The song "Drown" is about climate change and the need to wake up and demand action.

Info

Band/Artist Name & Pronunciation: The Side Dish (common pronunciation)

Recommended if you like: Drive-By Truckers, REM, The Heartbreakers, Dire Straits, The Monks

Story behind your band/artist name: I'm in a band called "Free Lobster Buffet" so when we started jamming together and wanted to perform the singer said we would be the "side dish to Chris' buffet" and it stuck.

Band Members: Dave Johnson - guitar vocals; Alex Cristofaro - lead guitar; Chris Boesen - bass guitar; John "Johnny Drummer" Woechner - drums, other percussion; Carson Wahl - keyboards, trumpet, other percussion

What part of the DC region is the artist tied to and how? Where is the artist's current home base if not DC : The founding members all live on Capitol Hill. I've been playing in various bands around DC since moving here in 1989.

At least 3 interesting/entertaining facts about the band related to persons/events in Washington DC area: The band formed when the Master of Naval Lodge #4 on Capitol Hill asked friends, including one fellow Naval Lodge brother, to play at his wife's birthday party on Capitol Hill.

Every rehearsal is technically a church service -- the Temple of Ska meets Wednesday evenings at my house to commune through music. I registered the church with the DC Court to be able to perform wedding ceremonies; the lead singer and I are both ministers in the Universal Life Church, courtesy of the ads in the back of Rolling Stone.

We play lots of local fundraisers, including the annual McCourt Concert at Solly's every March and events for local schools (most recently BASIS on April 8th)

Anything else we should know, or you want to share: We recorded this album at THE Sun Studios in Memphis, TN over two hot, sweaty nights in July, 2016. We stayed at a motel in downtown Memphis that was simultaneously hosting a group of Norwegian Harley enthusiasts and a days-long Indian Wedding celebration.

Though we rehearse and play shows in DC, we wrote much of the album over a few weekends of intense songwriting at a cabin outside of Winchester and while there we made a pilgrimage to see Patsy Cline's grave.

Band/Artist Name: : Skip House

Each current band member: First name, nickname (if any) and instrument: : Dan - Guitar, Nick - Vocals, Brett (bass face) - Bass, Tracy - Drums

What part of the DC region is the artist tied to and how? Where is the artist's current home base if not DC? : Arlington VA is where we practice. 2 of us live in Arlington, one in Alexandria and one in DC

At least 3 interesting/entertaining facts about the band that are related to persons/places/things/events that happened in the Washington DC area. Give us fun stuff, not normal bio stuff! : We have a lesbian drummer... who can say they have that?!
We once brought t-shirts to a show and the singer was throwing them out to members in the audience but ended up just knocking over beer bottles on the bar. We blame it on bad catches.
Bassface (Brett) is a bit of a character and sometimes yells out in the middle of shows "Keith is my father!!" When our friend from Bells and Hunters is at one of our shows. We have no idea why he does it, but we are now considering playing a little star wars next time Keith is at one of our shows.
We have a stuffed animal mascot called Skip the Camel which we mention during a cover of Captain Beefheart - Party of Special Things to Do sometimes at shows and tell a little story about him to lead up to the song. We kinda make it up every time so you never know what you are going to get. It might crack us up more than the audience.

Anything else we should know, or you want to share? : We all came into this band knowing we were not doing it for the money but the love of music. Made it clear right from the beginning that any money we make from shows will just go into a band fun that can get us into the recording studio and buy band merch. We now have a full album that was paid for by shows!

Info

Band/Artist Name: Stone Driver

Recommended if you like: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jimi Hendrix, Soundgarden

Story behind your band/artist name: Nothing too fancy, just thought the combination sounded cool. We liked the word "Stone" because of its lineage with bands like the Rolling Stones and Stone Temple Pilots, and it mirrors the classic meets modern rock vibe is a big part of our sound. "Driver" just relates to the fact that we want to keep moving and evolving musically and as a band; we have a lot of fun but always an incredibly high work ethic to keep writing, recording, and performing new music.

Band Members: Chad Lesch - Guitar; Tim Boyer - Bass & Backing Vocals; John Gossart - Lead Vocals; Dan Epley - Drums

What part of the DC region is the artist tied to and how? Where is the artist's current home base if not DC : Falls Church, VA is homebase, but all Stone Driver members live inside the Beltway and are proud DC/NOVA citizens

At least 3 interesting/entertaining facts about the band related to persons/events in Washington DC area:

1) We recently played a gig at the National Archives in DC and had the US Constitution, Declaration of Independence, and Bill of Rights sitting literally 10ft behind us; the National Archives had a constant security guard presence that started freaking out that the volume of our instruments was going to literally damage the historic documents. Luckily for freedom nothing was hurt and it was a fun show.

2) Sharing the bill with Living Colour and the B-52s at the 2016 Celebrate Fairfax Festival this year was absolutely surreal, and it was great to get a bunch of our DC fans and friends to rock out at a huge outdoor festival. Our drummer Dan was literally star-struck being able to see Will Calhoun; we were also 20ft away from the Shocktop Beer tent, so that didn't hurt either :-)

3) Being in a band, you often play some odd bills and venues that just don't quite make sense but you gotta roll with it. I'm not going to name names, but we once shared a bill with a "Nerd-Core" band, "Sitcom-Core" band, and a gangster rap artist that literally had a two foot high rainbow mohawk. We'll play some trippy and experimental stuff on occasion, but I felt like Alice stepping through the looking glass sharing that bill. The funniest part was one of the bands used a bedsheet to project video of 1960s era sitcom clips onto as part of their act; and apparently would use the same sheet at home every night on their bed. I swear I have never seen a nastier bedsheet in my life; it looked like a Jackson Pollock painting merged with a Vegas light show under the blacklight, it was some freaky stuff man.

Anything else we should know, or you want to share: Working with famed London producer Sefi Carmel on our latest album "Rocks" was a huge turning point for us. Sefi has produced work for legendary artists like David Bowie, Phil Collins, BB King, Bruno Mars, etc, so being able to tap into his extensive experience and musical acumen was a huge addition to the album, and really set the tone for the energy and presence I think we were able to capture on tape with his help. He's an incredibly humble and kind guy despite his ridiculous resume, our band was incredibly thankful that he agreed to work with us and I think the new album is our best yet in large part to his input.

Band/Artist Name & Pronunciation: Tha Raw, the raw

Recommended if you like: red hot chili peppers, the doors, mgmt, black sabbath (?)

Story behind your band/artist name: We play raw variations of the rocknroll genre. When we play live, we play in booty shorts. We strive twards heavy kinky rocknroll. We like to make pretty melodies and complimenting them with dark, twisted renditions. (or vice versa; dark to pretty.)

Band Members: Topher "Professor Scrump" Todaro-lead vocals/guitar. Pat "Blud Bath" McGrath-guitar/vocals. Joe "Huny Baeb" Grobani-Bass/vocals. Cody "Beatmaster Flex" Frazier-drums/vocals

What part of the DC region is the artist tied to and how? Where is the artist's current home base if not DC : We are from Annapolis.

At least 3 interesting/entertaining facts about the band related to persons/events in Washington DC area: The one time we played DC, at theElectric Maid, we played wearing nothing but booty shorts (like we always do) and the owner didn't seem to like us too much. That's the extent of our DC experience so far, unfortunately.

Anything else we should know, or you want to share: We just released our debut EP and we're trying to promote it. Based on the description of thesongs that you guys usually are interested in, I recommend track 5 from our EP, "Sparklefuq." Give that one a listen first.

Info

Band/Artist Name: Technicians

Recommended if you like: Deftones, At The Drive-In, Thursday, Fugazi

Story behind your band/artist name: The name has gone through several changes. We started with 'Nightlight,' but it sounded like we should be wearing mascara. We started searching for a new name and hit upon Technicians while watching the roadies set up at a Ben Folds show. We almost went with 'Kamikaze Rocketsheep.' Close call.

Band Members: Navid Marvi (guitar & vocals), Nick Glover (guitar), Ryan Hobbs (bass), Steve Smith (drums)

What part of the DC region is the artist tied to and how? Where is the artist's current home base if not DC : We mostly play around U Street & H Street in DC (Black Cat, DC9, Rock & Roll Hotel) but none of us live in DC anymore. We're in Annapolis, MD, Burke Fairfax & Leesburg, VA.

At least 3 interesting/entertaining facts about the band related to persons/events in Washington DC area: 1. Our first show was at the Korean Embassy to celebrate Obama’s first election. It was weirder than it sounds. We were asked to play after an acoustic set at an American University open mic. We then played 4 songs (not acoustic) as a two-piece and loop pedal. It was LOUD. After the fog cleared there was only 3 people left in the room. Still our best show!

2. Navid & Steve are also in Drop Electric—a DC post-rock/experimental band. They've headlined (and sold out) the 9:30 club and will release their fourth LP this year. Nick is in a prog-rock and video game tribute band called Gunblade X. They often play conventions in the DC/VA area. Hobbs was in Grey Sky Eternal, a VA alt-rock band.

3. Navid designs every headlining poster for Technicians, and 90% of the other posters. He has been lucky enough to also work with many other DC area bands to design their posters, album covers and logos.

Anything else we should know, or you want to share: 'Now That We're Home', our first full-length album, will be out on April 14th. 9 songs of eclectic post-punk. It’s been a long journey… we fully recorded the album in 2015 (at Inner Ear Studios) but were just not 100% happy with it. At the end of the day, it was going to cost too much to get the results we wanted. The tracks we were left with required too much work to be practical, so we ended up scrapping them and starting over. Naturally, it evolved a little and we’re so excited to finally share it.

'Mistakes' is the first single. We see it as a a love letter to the heavy music we grew up with. A marriage of Dischord-era punk and the melodic textures of Deftones. It's a sort-of lament on male bravado and overconfidence.

What part of the DC/DMV region is the band/artist connected to AND HOW?: DC--both members live in DC

What might we say to introduce the band/artist on the show?: Two Dragons and a Cheetah is the Washington, DC-based duo made up of singer-guitarist, Maryjo Mattea, and drummer, Joel Wu. 2D&C blends together abrasive hard rock guitars, melodic vocals, funk and alternative inspired drum beats, and intense, yet pop-sensible songwriting, resulting in a sound that is both aggressive and pretty all at the same time. It’s melodic garage rock, drenched in distortion, yet easy on the ears. It’s dirty and it’s beautiful and unlike anything you’ve ever heard before. It’s like unicorns making babies on the sun. It’s Two Dragons and a Cheetah.

3 fun local facts about the artist/bands relationship with the DC Area?: 1. Both members met while working at the Institute of Medicine
2. The band got its name from a random guy who shouted it out from the bar at a venue in Baltimore
3. Joel took the year off to travel the world for a year and you can follow his travels at www.joelwu.com; Maryjo is still in town making music and you can follow her exploits at www.maryjomattea.com

Is there a message to the DC region that the band/artist would want posted?: Give less f*cks. Drink more beer.

Info

Band/Artist Name & Pronunciation: Virginia Creep

Recommended if you like: Jesus Lizard, Melvins, Failure, Refused, Helmet

Story behind your band/artist name: Virginia creeper is a poisonous vine native to Virginia, and our singer JR came up with the modification for the band name.

Band Members: J.R. Hayes - vox, Aaron Mason - gtr, Christopher Wright - bass, Ben Tufts - drums

What part of the DC region is the artist tied to and how? Where is the artist's current home base if not DC : Everybody except for Aaron is from Sterling, VA. Aaron is from southern Maryland. JR currently lives in Leesburg, Chris lives in Winchester, and I live in NW DC.

At least 3 interesting/entertaining facts about the band related to persons/events in Washington DC area: JR and Ben met in high school, brought together by a mutual disdain for an English teacher, and a shared passion for Tool. It's the first band we've been in together, even though JR has been in the infamous grindcore band Pig Destroyer for nearly 20 years, and Ben has been in dozens of bands.

Pig Destroyer's guitarist Scott Hull has another band called Agoraphobic Nosebleed. He was riding in JR's truck years ago and picked up a mix tape Ben had made for him labeled "Honky Reduction"--(JR had asked Ben to send him a tape of funk, r&b and soul). Agoraphobic Nosebleed's next album was called "Honky Reduction."

VC released their first three song effort on Robotic Empire, the same label that has released numerous bands from Sterling, VA, including page ninety nine, city of caterpillar, malady and tideland.

Anything else we should know, or you want to share: Fresh from a break up and looking for a reason to hit things really hard, Ben contacted JR and half joked (as he had many times before) "Let's start a band." JR said "Sure, what are you doing next Monday?" Ben tapped his friend Aaron Mason (formerly of A Papier Mache Monster, and who had produced a number of recordings Ben had played on) to play guitar, and JR brought in Chris, who he had known from sharing bills with his old band Tideland.

What part of the DC region is the artist tied to and how? Where is the artist's current home base if not DC : Stuck in the ever-expanding Northern Virginia bubble. Have lived in Loudoun County for almost three decades and currently live in Leesburg, VA

At least 3 interesting/entertaining facts about the band related to persons/events in Washington DC area: - Through past projects, two of the members have had the privilege of performing on the 9:30 Club stage
- One of our members, while not having performed on the 9:30 Club stage, runs monitors at the 9:30 Club almost every night of the week
