Band/Artist Name & Pronunciation: Bumper Jacksons - Bum-per Jack-suns

Recommended if you like: Trying to NOT sound like popular bands :)... But! if you insist: willie nelson, pokey lafarge, nathaniel rateliff, wood brothers

Story behind your band/artist name: Jess and I started out traveling together across the southern US to where the music was, hunkering down for a while in each place and trying to learn from the source. We found ourselves doing just this in SW Louisiana, and were staying at the time with the Jackson family. They had a small rice farm with an inlaw suite out back and cheap rent. Well, we'd go into Lafayette, Baton Rouge and/or New Orleans to see bands and come home and play their tunes in our little cabin and their big black lab named Bumper would come on out and howl along to Jess's clarinet. So our duo became a trio, and since Bumper was by far the best vocalist of the three, he was deemed the bandleader and front-dog. When we left the farm and went back up north to Appalachia, we had to leave Bumperbehind... but as Levon Helms & Co did with Bob Dylan, we fashioned a band name in reference to the previous employment: The Bumper Jacksons' Band, which over time, and via lingual laziness, became Bumper Jacksons.

Band Members: Jess Eliot - clarinet, washboard, lead/harmony vox. Chris - guitars, banjo, lead/harmony vox. Alex - upright bass, harmony vox. Dan Samuels - drums. Joe - trumpet. Brian - trombone. Dave 'Duckpin' Hadley - pedal steel.

What part of the DC region is the artist tied to and how? Where is the artist's current home base if not DC : All of it? Chris (who's writing this) is 4 generations deep in DC (great grandfather emigrated from germany in the 1910s and was the upright bassist in the white house band and clarinetist in the marine band). Jess & Chris own a house in Brentwood, Joe lives in Southeast, Brian lives in Cheverly, MD. The others are Baltimoreans.

At least 3 interesting/entertaining facts about the band related to persons/events in Washington DC area: 1. We did this thing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mq9Q7uy_51I

2. I like to repeat the 4 generations part and relate stories about the Great Grandpa Franz Xavier Schumm I got from my grandma, like how GG Schumm played jazz bass on U street when the clubs were first popping up and in the same ones as jelly roll morton and duke ellington. Also, my grandma has stories about how it was her job to go downstairs and clean beer bottles for refilling, bc being German, ol Franz didn't take heed to prohibition and by doing so, became very popular amongst his musician buddies. This was not at all appreciated by the chief bottle washer, who had her workload nearly tripled between 1920 and 1933.

3. square dances were seriously how we paid the bills early on in this project. This was pre-horn section Bumper J's. DC's actually got the largest one in the US at themoment, thanks to the DC Square Dance Collective.

Band/Artist Name & Pronunciation: Cassie Urbany

Recommended if you like: Melissa Ethridge, Miranda Lambert, Sheryl Crow

Story behind your band/artist name: Call it country with a bit of bite. Cassie Urbany’s music combines catchy, resonant melodies with just enough attitude to give it the occasional ‘don’t let the door hit your butt on the way out’ sound. The songs – a bit folk, a bit blues, a bit country – are the collaborative work of a mother-daughter songwriting duo and performed by artist Cassie Urbany at songwriter showcases, coffeehouses and clubs in the Washington, D.C. area. “I love how my love of music and my mom’s love of writing have been combined into relatable songs,” Urbany said. “It’s such a bonding experience,” said her mother, Deborah Straszheim, a newspaper reporter in Connecticut. “And she has such a beautiful voice.” Cassie Urbany began writing melodies in high school, but a college breakup transformed her guitar playing into songwriting. After leaving home in New England to get a fresh start in D.C., Cassie wrote her first two songs, then came home to visit her mother, who’d suffered a breakup at about the same time as her daughter. The two co-wrote their first song during the visit, then began sending music and lyrics back and forth via text message. Typically, mother or daughter will share an idea for a song and discuss it, starting with the song title or message. Cassie Urbany then writes a melody or offers her mother several to choose from, sending them via text. Straszheim then texts back lyrics, giving her daughter veto power over those she doesn’t like. Despite the general arrangement, both offer thoughts on melody and lyrics, sometimes singing them to one another, making the songs true collaborations

Recommended if you like: Gram Parsons, Old 97's, Emmylou Harris, Buck Owens, The Knitters

Story behind your band/artist name:

--We are the Rat Pack meets country music, flashy suits, and sparkly guitars. We wanted a name that reflects the driving sound (a "highballing" train runs at full throttle) and our love of the sharp-dressed, rat pack drinking culture - highballs!

Band Members:

--Kenny Paul (Rhythm, Guitar, and Vocals), Belen  (Prettiness and Vocals), Sean (Fearless Lead Guitar and Vocals), Drake (The Drums), and Charlie (The Bass).

What part of the DC region is the artist tied to and how? Where is the artist's current home base if not DC :

--DC Metro - we are peppered throughout!

At least 3 interesting/entertaining facts about the band related to persons/events in Washington DC area:

--1. We are all refugees of punk rock and garage rock.
--2. We take our look and our sound extremely seriously, but no one pokes fun at us more than ourselves. In other words, we take our sound and performances seriously but not in an annoying, douchy way.
--3. We think commercial country sucks, but don't judge people that like it. In fact, we invite lovers of all things twangy to give our sound a try!
--4. We write a bunch of songs about killing, drinking, adultery, fighting, and love, but that does not make us a bunch of murdering, cheating, aggressive alcoholics - though we have a ton of love to give!
--5. We got banned from the Quarry House Tavern for being too "raucous".
--6. 100% guaranteed that you will laugh at our shows - if not with us, at us.
--7. Our full-length albums were recorded at the made-famous-by-Dischord-Records studio Inner Ear, and engineered by Don Zientara (He did records for Fugazi, Bad Brains, Minor Threat, and 100's of others and was also featured on Dave Grohl's HBO Series "Foo Fighters Sonic Highways").
--8. All of us are veteran musicians from bands in Cleveland, Pittsburgh, DC, and Baltimore.

Anything else we should know, or you want to share:

--We play music for the love of the craft. Whether there is an audience of hundreds or only a few, we play every show as though is could be our last (because you never know right?). Not only do we love to perform, but have great respect for people who appreciate the experience of the live performance and are willing to take the time to venture out and explore new sounds. We tour from Boston to Georgia and as far west (so far) as Ohio and have developed a loyal following during our travels. Our upcoming 3rd full-length compilation of original music is being recorded now and will be released later during 2017.

Story behind your band/artist name: Got married without vetting the last name, I guess. didn't think it through.

Band Members: Julia Kasdorf, acoustic guitar and vox

What part of the DC region is the artist tied to and how? Where is the artist's current home base if not DC : Loudoun County, VA

At least 3 interesting/entertaining facts about the band related to persons/events in Washington DC area: When I first got to town and knew NO ONE, I went to open jam night at Velvet Lounge. This trio of musicians were staggering through some kind of blues number without a bass player and I just couldn't stand it so uninvited I jumped up, grabbed the bass (it was just sitting there!) and pulled the thing together. the whole room breathed a sigh of relief. That's the power of the bass line for you.

Met my husband-to-be at the History of the Electric Guitar Event at the Museum of Science and Technology in 1998. There was this distressed telecaster at the Fender Booth that we both spotted and both of us grabbed it at the same time! I won that tussle (i got to play it and he had to watch), but he went home and told his bandmates "I just met the woman I'm going to marry".

When I first moved to DC from San Francisco, I was feeling like the Queen of Bass Players and the first thing I did when I got to town was call up Bill Kirchen. "Hi, Bill. I'm Julia, and my friend/your pal Rocky from California said I should give you a call. Do you need a bass player?" Everybody knows that Johnny Castle is and always has been Bill's bass player, except me. So Bill was like "Um, well, er...I already have a bass player...." He was very nice, but golly, what cheek I had! If I had done a little more research, I wouldn't have had the gumption to make that call!

Anything else we should know, or you want to share: I used to be in a damn good alt-country band called One Horse Town . We won a Wammie in 2006 when our album "Dawn Will Deliver" came out, produced by Jon Carroll.

I have a new album out now called "Motel" and it's a summary of what I've learned to love about music over the past 40 years - driving rhythm, killer leads that speak, and honest, visceral lyrics. Its being promoted to radio stations by Peter Hay, Twin Vision. I don't expect to cut a swath in the industry, I just want folks to have a chance to hear my music. I think its worth hearing.
